I agree these well cap covers are hazardous. I had debated writing about them and decided against it, and now regret that choice. Sorry.

I think part of the problem is the rest of the road surface is so smooth, so these minor depressions are a significant departure from the norm. Also they're right in the middle. And this lane is on a downhill so is taken at speed.

Thanks for seconding this. It seems unlikely that this little thing would matter, but I totally lost control of my bike. Really lucky there were parked cars blocking me from traffic. I was looking out for other hazards so didn't notice the hazards I hit :/ .

It does seem to be a combination of cap covers and the topography of the road surface. I think fixing it requires more than just raising or lowering the casting that supports the cap cover, not sure really. (Could this be the result of inadequate compaction or subsurface support when MassDOT's contractor paved the road?)

These covers are smaller than the typical water gate valve covers, I don't recognize the style. Is there something different about these valves from typical Cambridge Water Dept. valves?

Here are two photos of what clearly seem to be monitoring wells to me, which are *not* the responsibility of the Water Dept, right?

By contrast, here are some gate valve covers from nearby. These are larger and less hazardous and also not in the bike lane. Note pen for scale. Pen is 5 5/8" long.

John, thank you for posting about Issue 4683257 which is about this exact problem. Nothing has been done though I am not the only person who has been hurt here. Please improve upon this before someone gets badly injured.
