Attaching Westbound table

Plastering signs all over the road won't solve people ignoring speed limits. More likely it will cause them to ignore when the speed limit changes, such as the curve north of Jericho Hill. According to MassDOT, the signs are placed appropriately -

The length of all speed zones shall be computed to the nearest tenth of a mile. Each speed zone should be as long as possible while taking into consideration the constraints due to stopping sight distance and changes in adjacent land use. Zones should, generally, be a minimum of ½ mile in length.

That would be up to the city to decide. They know the regulations of what can and can't be done.

I would say that you should provide details on exactly where and when the speeding issue occurs (and not just the whole street all the time). This will help focus the city on determining what the best solution is. If you're too specific (aka more signs) they may just respond that the signage is appropriate and adequate. If you're too general you may not get a response in a reasonable time, or at all.

Thanks Karl. I have been in contact with the Police Department. They have deployed the speed radar trailer, collected data and issued citations. While I very much appreciate this effort, it provided only temporary relief. The police have a lot of area to cover and therefore cannot patrol Brigham all the time, so something more/different needs to be done. The situation is only going to get worse after the planned resurfacing of Brigham Street.
Bigelow Street has two nice permanent solar-powered radar/flashing speed-limit signs. It would be a good idea to add these to Brigham as a reminder to drivers. These type of signs are effective.
What I would really like to see done is to have Brigham Street cut into two sections near where the power lines cross just east of Jericho Hill. This will close Brigham to through traffic and be a permanent solution to the problem.

Mike - I have assigned this issue to the engineer that oversees traffic signage and regulations. Let him look into it and give his input. Karl is correct about specifics. The more information we have the better we are able to come up with a potential solution. Stay tuned. DPW

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I appreciate Karl's input, but wonder if the standard "one-size fits-all" MassDOT regulations are appropriate for a street such as Brigham. The street width varies many times and there are very narrow sections with big trees right up against the edge of the road. I hope that something can be done to help with the situation.

Hi Program Administrator, When can we expect to get feedback from Traffic Engineering?

The City Engineer is currently reviewing the various signage options to coincide with some other planned work on Brigham St. As soon as we have some more concrete information, we'll pass that along. Thanks for being patient, but know that we are working to come up with a solution.

Just...maybe....he doesn't want to get killed. Did you think of that? And, notice, the issue was not sent to MPD! Issue could be sent to 2 departments...

Hi PAWILD*, Thanks for your input. The more people we have who want this issue resolved, the better chance we'll have at getting solution. I have been in separate contact with MPD and they are aware of the situation. MPD deployed their mobile radar unit last spring, collected speed data, and subsequently patrolled and issued a number of citations/warnings to speeders. The radar unit was out again last week, so MPD is still actively monitoring the situation.

While I very much appreciate MPD's effort, it provides only temporarily relief. Once the police activity ends, the situation goes right back to where it was. People using Brigham as a connector/bypass between route 85 and points west have absolutely no respect for those living along Brigham street. I really hope the city can come up with an effective solution.

Mike - My apologies, I didn't want to respond until i have an actual answer for you. I spoke to the City Engineer as soon as I saw your most recent inquiry a few days ago. He wanted to review the response with another engineer in our office who oversees traffic and signage issues. As soon as I have that information, i will forward that to you. The Speed Limit on Brigham Street is 25 MPH from Mill Street - South to Clover Hill Street with an 800-foot section of roadway between Leoleis Drive the Jericho Hill Recreation Area posted at 20 MPH. There are signs posted at the beginning of each section of roadway with the proper SPEED LIMIT signs, including Advanced Warning signs for the Jericho Hill Recreation Area Speed Limit Zone (20 MPH), with the exception of one SPEED LIMIT sign (30 MPH) for eastbound traffic located in front of Jericho Hill Recreation Area Speed Limit Zone – D.P.W. crews have been notified to replace this missing sign.
In 2008, as directed by the Marlborough Traffic Commission, additional SPEED LIMIT signs (25 MPH) were installed at the following locations:
• For westbound traffic on Brigham Street - after the Westboro Road intersection, for traffic entering the Brigham Street corridor,
• For eastbound traffic on Brigham Street – after the Westboro Road intersection, for traffic entering the Brigham Street corridor,
• For westbound traffic and eastbound traffic on Brigham Street – near the westerly intersection of Desimone Drive (approximately half way between Westboro Road and the 20 MPH Speed Limit change near the Jericho Hill Recreation Area).
Once the missing Speed Limit sign is replaced, the travel time between the Speed Limit signs at the posted speed is less than one minute (43 – 58 seconds). We have determined that additional SPEED LIMIT signs on Brigham Street to reduce the timing interval to remind motorists of the Speed Limit is not warranted.

Hi Program Administrator, Thanks for your reply and your attention to this issue. I was pleasantly surprised to find this forum after I moved to Marlborough just over a year ago. In my experience, this forum is an effective way to notify the city of issues, and the city has always responded in timely manner. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Regarding the trolls, I completely agree. Positive comments and participation and are encouraged and always welcome. Negativity is unproductive and just doesn't help anyone. I don't know if this is feasible, but may I suggest a policy update to simply delete trolling comments? Over time the trolls would get the hint.

Is the "30 MPH" a typo in your response above? Should it read "with the exception of one SPEED LIMIT sign (20 MPH) for eastbound traffic located in front of Jericho Hill..."?

Sorry for the typo error - the Speed Limit is 25 MPH on Brigham Street with a reduction in the Speed Limit to 20 MPH through the Jericho Hill Recreation Area to Leoleis Drive.

Hi PAWILD*, The issue has been addressed by Public Works, Traffic Engineering and MPD. The results of Engineering's study are included in the comments above. MPD has collected speed data on two separate occasions and will act on the results of the data collection. Please take the time to read through the comments above before blindly posting negative comments.

Positive comments contribute to a solution. Negative comments become part of the problem. :-)
