What's the timeline on this? And can the GDOT be asked to fix it please? It's an serious accident waiting to happen. The days are now shorter and the foot traffic has increased as the schools are now back in session. Thanks.
Late last fall, the Georgia Department of Transportation gave the City permission to install additional protected left turn signals to several legs of the intersections at McDonough and Candler. These intersections are complicated – each railroad crossing is actually 2 intersections adjacent to each other that are separated by the RR tracks. Because there are so many elements at each crossing – new protected left turns on several additional legs at each intersection, the regular traffic signals, pedestrian signals, the railroad pre-emption – some special equipment is required to make the signals work as planned.
GDOT is providing new advanced traffic controllers (the cabinets that house the technology to run the system) as well as additional signal heads at no cost to the City. The technology that will be used in the railroad crossing improvements is innovative and will help improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists at these intersections. We believe this is worth the extra time required for completion.
The new equipment is presently undergoing final testing and programming. We should have the new signals operational by the end of September. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
