That space used to be a parking spot. It is way easier to see through the planters than it was before when anything from a car to a big SUV could park on those corners.

There is no way that that space used to be a parking space, the planters and barriers extend beyond the corner of the intersection.

Sorry, maybe I misinterpreted... the space to one side of the crosswalk on each corner used to be a parking spot. Obviously there were not spots in the actual intersection. The configuration is a bit different on each corner too since one side of the street is angle parking. It would be good to know which specific corner the OP is having issues with.

I notice that vehicles traveling north have a hard time seeing oncoming Main St. traffic over the planters. Planters + plants = greater than 36 inches and should not have been approved and installed.

Thank you for contacting us about this issue. We have contacted the team who cares for these planters and asked that they be trimmed to a lower height. We did review the initial plantings with the intent of having these be shorter, but the warm summer apparently made the plants happy and tall.

I have already reported this issue once with no response from the city. The old configuration made it impossible to see people in the crosswalk with parking close to the crosswalk. The removal of the parking spaced made it a lot easier too see pedestrians and safer for all but in someones infinite wisdom the city put these large view blocking planters in place again making the intersection unsafe for all. The simple solution would be to simply remove the planters, thus making the intersection safer for all with no obstructions. Easy fix and it would be nice if we could get our taxpayer money back on the planters

So the plan is to have large planters, which are over 2 feet tall, and expect the plants to not grow too tall? With all the planters put up around town and the limited resources available, how will Burlington be able to maintain them. This isn't the only planter in town that is an issue.

When they cause and accident, who will be held liable because sight lines were knowingly obstructed. Sorry Burlington, this was not well thought out or executed.

100% agree with Burlingtonian, those personally liable should be the DPW director, Mayor, city council, and DPW commission for letting this happen.

The planters need to be removed for the safety of all. This issue cannot be closed until that happens. Suck it up it was a mistake to place them at that spot just admit it and stop telling the taxpayers that pay your salary that you know everything. Get rid of the planters. This directed to director of DPW with total respect to the DPW workers that are being forced to implement these policies while having to put their own lives in danger playing with the planters and installing excess bollards in roadways.

Our primary goal with quick-build curb extensions is to improve safety for all by slowing travel speeds. Our engineers have reviewed sight lines at the intersection with the planters in place and they have confirmed there is adequate sight distance. We'll work with our landscaping team on a new planting plan for 2019 to prevent the obstructions we encountered this year. In addition, we will continue to work with the Police Department to monitor any changes in crashes at this intersection.

So your plan is to wait and see if an accident occurs. It is unbelievable that you would place motorists and cyclists in danger. As a cyclists, I would not want a car to pull out in front of me so they can see around the planters. This is a safety issue and needs to be resolved before an accident occurs.

Bottom line to all within the city involved with this planter initiative.
Planters etc. may work in some areas but are not an answer to every intersection in the city.
The most obvious area where they do not work and are making it unsafer for all is the corner of Main St. and South Champlain St.
Further arrogance and denial by the city on this intersection is a disservice to every person who lives and or visits our city.
The Mayor should locate himself on one side of the intersection, and the DPW director should locate himself on another side of the intersection and observe, they may not admit it but they would find out their arrogance on the subject area is a danger to all. This case must be reopened and the planters etc. must be removed.

Has DPW looked at how far set back the stop sign is in relation to the intersection.
FYI, had a Toyota Tacoma pull out in front of me this morning at this intersection.
