"Children Crossing" signs are absolutely pivotal at this intersection. People driving on Brook as well as Clay do get very reckless, and if they don't see cars they tend not to stop. At least this would be at least one measure to let them know it's not JUST cars they need to be looking out for!

There MUST be a sign there~perhaps several, because of the slanted intersection Brook makes possible...at least ONE.

This is a tricky intersection that needs to be a priority speed trap with appropriate signage before someone gets hit by a car.

This is a tough intersection. I think sometimes people don't even see the stop signs. I think 'children playing' signs would be very beneficial but also a flashing red light may make it even more noticeable.

this has been an intersection that used to be more frequently monitored by police. As the apparent police presence seems to have waned, driving speeds seem to have increased and rolling stops the norm. Increased signs and patrols would make a big difference.

This intersection is dangerous, strange angles, unpainted crosswalk, one way street treated like an urban expressway.

So a bright yellow playground sign was added to Brook Road, but Clay Street needs a similar sign. The sign that was added is actually after the intersection and won't deter the speeders on Clay St. Thanks

There is at least one 'Children Playing' sign on Brook, on the north side of Clay, but it's not placed very well. Too far down Brook to make people aware prior to reaching intersection.

Is cutting trees down really the best solution to this?? Trees provide so many vital things to us - shade, cooling features, carbon storage, beauty. I don't think we should cut the trees down. Adding children at play signs, or perhaps some white striped cross-walks for the kids to cross the street from the daycare to the playground would be helpful.

Definitely don't want to see the trees removed.

Saw another car run the stop sign at the intersection of Brook Road and W Clay Street this morning. This is a VERY regular occurrence. Is the city going to make any effort to put up a flashing red traffic light or some other means of alerting drivers of the stop sign? It's really a dangerous area and with the daycare and playground right there, one would think this would be a priority.

8/7/2014 - Richmond Traffic Engineering Team (20020895373) noted as of 5/29/2014 2:01:22 PM: Speed samples taken revealed the average (mean) speed of 25mph. The crash history revealed only one crash within the latest 3 year period (4/1/11 - 4/1/14). This crash involved someone making a u-turn and failed to maintain proper control. Sent a letter to Mrs. Nichols on 05-29-14.

What's the next step. Every day people run the stop signs, from all directions of traffic. It's not safe. Can we have the pedestrian walk way lines re-painted? They are eroding away.

Can we please have this issue addressed? Children playing signs are not enough. I live on this intersection, and regularly witness drivers running through the Clay St. stop signs. Because of the angle of Brook road, they aren't easily seen. Can a blinking red be installed? What about pedestrian crosswalk lights?

Still waiting for some kind of action. The crosswalks have all but disappeared. It would be nice if we could get them re-painted (especially in front of the daycare).

In response to the RVA Care Warrior comment in May, just because there has only been one crash reported in 3 years, I still think we need to consider the increasing pedestrian traffic and have more attention drawn to the all-way stop signs. I agree with MzFitz, let's get a blinking red light or pedestrian crosswalk lights. Those of us who live nearby (and others beyond, I imagine) would rather see the city be proactive rather than wait until someone is hurt to make a change.

I work at the daycare located at this intersection. I've regularly seen disregard to the stop signs, even when the children are still crossing the street to the playground. Toddlers and young children are occasionally erratic, requiring a good amount of help crossing the street. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable when cars squeeze through when the end of our line is still in the middle of the (very rough) crosswalk. Definitely would like to see further action taken at this intersection.

What's the status on this? We have been talking about this since 4-2013 and nothing has changed with the exception of a few ineffective signs. Can the City be more aggressive on this? I think we can all agree that we should be proactive rather than reactive to a tragic event.

Yesterday, traffic from W. Broad was routed through this intersection due to an accident. This intersection in particular is not in any shape to handle the overflow. Not only does the infrastructure lack the signage to safely protect pedestrians, but the road is so deteriorated here that it't a danger. My son was sitting in his stroller in front of Gwar Bar, while I was discussing how dangerous the intersection is with a City worker and a contractor working on the bar. While we were discussing the lack of action, one of many oversized vehicles drove past, breaking up concrete, and throwing it toward my 18 month old son. It barely missed him, but hit the side of the building. Had it been a few inches higher, it would have certainly broken a window. Please, let's get moving on this!

I have worked exactly on this intersection at this daycare for almost five years. The stop signs have never been visible, and, thus, many cars run through this intersection. Granted, many people have lived in this neighborhood long enough, knowing full well, and based on common sense, that there are most definitely stop signs there. So on that end, it is wreckless on their part. However, if there were stop signs better placed, even bigger stop signs placed, and most certainly that this is a FREQUENTLY USED crossing zone for CHILDREN and that needs to be upheld and respected. I cannot tell you how many times me and my coworkers have had to stare down cars at this intersection to make sure that they make a complete stop and wait for all of the kids to be safely on the sidewalk before they floor it out of there. If we, employees of A Blooming Child Petite Academy, are acting as these stop signs, I would suggest that we get paid by the City of Richmond...or the City should really just put up adequate stop signs on all parts of the intersections, child crossing zone signs, and an adequate way or reinforcing such (which is where a stationed, vehicular officer comes in), especially on weekdays from the hours of 7am-6pm. I see that this petition was started last year, and nothing has been done bevause of "so few" accidents. Well, let's try to be, as a concerned community (that includes you, City Hall of Richmond) as progressively proactive as possible to better ENSURE the safety of CHILDREN, pedestrians of this intersection, and drivers of this intersection.

The stop signs are an issue throughout Clay. I live two blocks from the intersection in question and constantly see cars driving through the three-way stop in front of my house. When spending time at my freind's house, who do live in front of this very awkward 4 way stop, I see the same thing. "Children At Play" signs are the absolute least that should be done here. Frankly, given the fact that it's going to require data to get any progress on this matter ("data" being more accidents or higher frequency of speeding to influence the mean speed [increasing the likelihood of accidents]..), we may be better off buying the damn signs ourselves.

Where are we on this matter? While crossing the street this afternoon a reckless driver zoomed right through the intersection, breaking only a few feet from our line of toddlers. It's frustrating that so little has been done about this long-standing issue.

Today, in my brief time outside, I saw two cars blow the intersection. One of those times was when I was helping the daycare kids cross the street. What tragedy are we waiting for to take action?

One of the drivers actually stopped when I waved to him, as I was wearing my bright green running jacket. I politely let him know that he ran a stop sign. He had no idea it was there.

In the two most minutes that it took to load my son in to the car, 3 cars blew through the stop signs on Clay.

I'm out on the playground, and in the last 2 minutes, 2 cars blew the stop signs. If it was a weekday, the daycare kids would have been crossing the street.

Another letter has been written to the city asking them to assess this intersection and to fix it immediately. This is ridiculous.

I'm with Melissa. I've written to my councilman about this, and he blew it off. Do I have to write to others on city council? It's absurd that the city would stand idly by while such a threat exists, and so many people are requesting action. At the very least, I'd like them to acknowledge these concerns. If they continue to do nothing, that's on them.

I wrote this original comment when my son was 20 months old. He is now 31/2! We no longer live in Richmond, but I'm horrified that the City has refused to deal with this issue. We are talking about a public park, a childcare facility, and numerous residents with children! Let's hope that it does not take a tragedy or lawsuit to spur action.

In light of the recent, horrific accident on Grove this week, I'd like to remind the powers that be, that this intersection is incredibly dangerous. Because people don't obey or see the stop signs on Clay, they can reach excessive speeds. A study needs to be done immediately. Something at this intersection needs to change.

there is need for streets in Jackson Ward to have painted crosswalk in this area. This could be job our students to earn money or adults that is on welfare to get paid a couple each da this summer. We want all to be safe in this area when they come to visit in the Ward.

The crosswalks at Brook and Marshall have been painted since being re-paved. When are the ones for this intersection going to be painted? Better yet, when is the overall safety of this intersection going to be addressed and corrected?

I'm ready to start posting profanity laced comments on this thread if this doesn't become some sort of priority of the city soon. The RVA Care Warrior comments above are either BS or an anomaly. I'd like a local resident to be notified when a traffic study is done, because I work from home and don't recall seeing anyone posted long enough for an ample study to be done. Also, a few days after that date, another accident occurred at the intersection. It was scary enough that the neighborhood kids had to witness it on a Sunday afternoon, but I'm grateful that the lives of a few dozen toddlers weren't at risk.

Yet again, a careless driver almost mowed down a line of toddlers today at 11:55 AM. Is this a priority yet?

A silver Lexus almost hit a different group of toddlers on their way out to the playground at 11:00. Why are there still no crosswalks? Where's the signage? Why are we waiting for tragedy to take action?

A gentleman was just hit riding his bike through the intersection. Is this a priority yet?

I've reached out to my councilman, police, and to the traffic calming division. I've been told that we don't generate enough revenue to fund adequate infrastructure. I've also been told that they won't do anything until enough violations logged. If the police say for 30 seconds at this intersection, they'd see at least violation in that time. What has to happen to get basic infrastructure here?!

I am will to put to buy a sign right there. We need it for all children that use the playground!!
