Thanks for your report. The City of Cambridge owns the traffic signal at Cambridgepark Drive and Steel Place. If there is a maintenance issue, please re-open this report and we will address it. Otherwise, this report has been forwarded to the Cambridge Police Department for traffic enforcement.

I believe the request was to have engineering revisit the timing of signals at this intersection to make them both safer and more in line with pedestrian needs. I'm also confused by the suggestion that the police will improve matters, given that they jaywalk through here as much as anyone else, since that's the only practical way to approach this intersection.

Thanks Laura. That's exactly what I was hoping for. I frequently see people with strollers running through here (there are two daycares immediately adjacent to the intersection). I can't imagine trying to cross it with a mobility device like a walker or wheelchair.

This intersection continues to have major vehicle/pedestrian conflicts. Today I was again nearly hit by a driver who had begun the turn and was blocking the box. They tried to finish exiting the intersection, over this crosswalk, during the pedestrian priority. They seemed shocked to have pedestrians stepping out into the street.

This needs to have a detail guiding traffic and peds every day at least until construction is complete and the usual pedestrian path through the intersection is available again.

This intersection is a mess - no walk signal to cross Cambridge park drive? Sidewalk on west side of steel place has been closed for weeks with no provision made for pedestrians. Time to act

I wanted to inquire if there are any updates from the City on this issue. The intersection is a mess as walkers do not have sidewalks to walk on, and then cars run the red lights and block the box, causing cars to almost hit walkers. Please consider adding another lane to the road or improving the length of lights at this intersection.

The timing at this intersection is unfortunately the only safe way of operating this intersection given the extremely high volume of turning vehicles from Steel Place. There is no alternative timing plan that would substantially reduce pedestrian delay while maintaining safe operations without also making substantial changes to the intersection geometry.

In the long term, we expect that geometric modifications will allow for a narrower cross-section for Steel Place, thus reducing the length of the crosswalk. Vehicles blocking the crosswalk is an enforcement issue on which we will continue to work with CPD.
