For the same reason they ignore every speed limit sign: they are selfish and just don't care! There has been a lot of talk about traffic calming in our town but very little action. Speed humps would likely be a good solution at the intersection you mention, but the town doesn't seem to have much interest or resolve in doing anything about it.

Take the stop sign down and replace it with a flashing caution light.

I agree- I live on Belmont and I think they need speed bumps there to force people to slow down. We also need a five way stop sign at Mather and Belmont.

Thank you for your support and I agree, speed bumps would help a lot. I also think a camera capturing liscense plates and sending them to the local news stations could be effective in obtaining better patrolling of this. There are so many families with kids here, people walking dogs, it makes no sense to me why someone would jeopardize lives to run a stop sign.

This is a huge problem. I live on Treadwell with 2 small children and have other families with small children all around. People fly though.

i no what your talking about , i live on shepard ave and my self and others have been talking to the police about the speeders in this area and they have been doing radar up in this area. last night i was pulling in my driveway around 1 am after working the 4 to 12 shift and as i was getting out of my car it was very quiet out and i heard a car coming up shepard ave and it seemed he was doing 70 mph and to my surprise it was a hamden police car, it was one of the white cars and i no the traffic division does not work midnights but yet again when do they work but anyway it had to be one of the k-9 cars because they are also white. my god he was going so fast with no lights on . he could have killed some one if they were pulling out of a driveway !!!

We got this stop sign added after Treadwell was changed back to a two-way (with no neighborhood input, as no one was notified) in October of 2008. Unfortunately, it isn't enough. I second the idea of speed bumps. Waite Street has got 2 speed bumps recently--between Hartford Tpke and Ridge Rd.

Incidentally, a main reason Treadwell was changed to one-way some years back was because of accidents at the corner of Belmont and Treadwell. A car ended up lying on someone's front lawn.

to superfly; yes they have a job to do, but it does not mean putting the public at risk doing so.How about we send that officer to drive up and down your street at a high rate of speed while you try to back out of your driveway,or while your children are playing. Not very smart. did we not learn from the accident in west haven where 2 milford police officers were traveling at 70 and 90 mph and killed 2 teens ?or were they doing so to catch the bad guys ?????? You would feel different if that was a friend of yours or god forbid a family member . no need to put people at risk driving that fast without lights on and chances are he was not going to an emergency !!!

I came to a complete stop at a sign on Paradise and 4 Rod, and the driver behind me threw up their hands in frustration! Almost rearended me too. Nobody stops anymore. Not even school buses.

Just out walking the pups and in that time 4 cars went by and only 1 stopped at this intersection. I even screamed at 1 of them and they gave me the finger. I just do not understand.

So what happens next, does any of the powers that be assist in encouraging drivers to stop at a stop sign to prevent a child from being killed?

We moved to Whitneyville from East Rock last spring, and I know our previous alderman was very interested in SeeClickFix and quick to resolve the issues posted here. I don't even know who represents the residents of my new neighborhood, but perhaps we could help make this site a helpful resource for Hamden residents * and* our reps? Any leads for who I can call?
Additionally, I would like to say, I believe this site *can* be an extremely helpful resource if used appropriately. Frankly, I think criticizing the grammar and punctuation of its users only lessens the value and potential of the site. Perhaps we can leave our arguments out of this and keep this as a place to express our concerns without fear of disparaging remarks? Maybe the powers that be will take it a bit more seriously.

I believe the Treadwell and Belmont intersection in discussion here lies within the Fifth Legislative Council District, whose current representative is Kathleen Schomaker.

Thanks for writing. On the hamden.com website you will see a "traffic calming" section. Whitneyville Civic Association put together some great thoughts for improvements; we will start to implement solutions late august when bond proceeds come in. Stay tuned.

Many of us live in Hamden areas where this situation happens also. Just think of the $ from fines if there was an officer rotated through some of these areas. Sure some would stop, but most are so use to going through the signs that they won't pay much attention until they get stopped and fined. Speed bumps will just cause problems with snow removal and need constant replacement. We can't keep up with the pot holes. Some one should invent a device that just takes a picture if the vehicle doesn't stop for the appropriate amount of time. This will catch the ones that slow down and roll through also. They are just as guilty. Fines can be given and these will pay for the equipment. In this day and age a computer program can be created or just put up surveillance cameras. If software hasn't already been developed then someone should start with the idea and run with it. I only wish I had the knowledge. What city wouldn't purchase it and address the welfare and safety of its taxpayers?

Hi, CAR. I just had to add: in Europe they've been using speed cameras for years. My German husband often comments on this, wondering why they don't use them in the US. They generate a lot of revenue for the city and are easy to use. The cameras simply take a picture of the owner's license plate and then the driver receives a fine in the mail.

BTW: If any of you have time to, make sure to attend the Whitneyville Civic Association meetings and try to get involved.
