The reason that flashing cross walk was installed there in the first place is because a woman died trying to cross MLK at night in late 1999 or early 2000. Particularly with the changed traffic flow, there needs to be at a minimum 1 flashing cross walk reinstalled.

As part of this project the crosswalk "at" 17th avenue N was removed because there was no opportunity to provide a center refuse median/beacon assembly, because of the left-turn lanes. So, the new plans call for 5 new "mid-block" crosswalks between 12th and 12th; between 15th and 16th; between 19th & 20th; between 23rd and 24th; between 28th & 29th. These new location will allow us to construct a center median and install flashing beacons in the medians. Plans are being finalized and work will begin shortly and completed later this fall. There will also be future crossing protection at 26th Avenue N in some form that is currently under design.
