Descrizione
The speed limit on Tunxis Road between Ridgewood and Sedgwick is 25 mph. Drivers zoom up and down Tunxis at speeds that are likely double the speed limit. There are many families on this street, as well as countless children walking to and from Duffy School and Sedgwick Middle School every week day. We need an increased police presence, as well as a monitoring device so we can track the average speed over time. Once we have that data, we then need to decide how to best address this issue - including better signage and traffic-calming measures.

This small stretch of road seems to be one of the safest that I travel upon, even though the cars travel faster than I'd like.
I have lived in the area for decades and I travel that road nearly every day and this is what I've seen from many perspectives, including the driver's seat, the bicyclist's seat, the parent walking with a young child, the parent pushing a stroller, and the pet owner walking a dog.
When students or buses are visible, most car drivers go about 30...give or take a couple of mph. When they're not, nearly every car does between 35-40. Once in a while I see one going as low as 20 or as high as 50. I've seen a couple of minor fender benders at the intersections. I've even seen the deadly aftermath of a teenager driving WAY too fast in a tiny car. I don't know if anyone has been hit while going into or out of a driveway there, but I can see where it could be a white knuckle experience for drivers who are either very young or very old. Or otherwise distracted.
My point? Two things:
One, the cars that I've seen speed the worst have nearly always been either the older muscle cars, the newer souped-up imports, the near-exotics or the actual exotics. They speed everywhere.
Two, I avoided buying a house on Tunxis, Ridgewood, Wood Pond, Sedgwick, etc. because of how busy those roads are. As much for the speed as for the constant stream of traffic. And those daily sirens!! Some folks love all of that activity. I don't. For those of you who live there and don't love it, why stay where you're not happy?

Ray Dio - you write that "the cars travel faster than I'd like."I would second that comment, and then add that cars travel faster than the speed limit of 25 mph, which goes beyond personal preference and is actually against the law. While you may live in the area, I, as well as numerous neighbors, heartily disagree with your comments as we actually live on Tunxis and deal with this on a daily basis.
With regard to your two "points" - the cars that speed up and down Tunxis every day are driven by lots of different folks, many driving "regular" cars. I am confused by your second "point" as it is both unhelpful and rude. The point of this site is to share concerns and work together to get them addressed. Your home-buying preferences are of no relevance to this issue, and your suggestion to move (duh - why didn't I think of that??) both trivializes our concerns and does nothing whatsoever to address a serious problem.
My point? If you want to help - awesome. The intent of this site is for community members to get involved, offer HELPFUL suggestions, share information and make towns better places for everyone to live. If you want to write snarky and dismissive comments, I am sure you will find countless other sites online that court numerous individuals who do not mind wasting their time reading one another's posts.

Amy - I was being helpful. Well, except maybe for the last sentence which reads differently than was intended. I'd edit it out, if I could. (lesson learned)
The posted speed limit of 25mph is rarely obeyed anywhere because it's not a true & honest speed limit. Traffic engineers know that posting 25 will help keep the speed below 35-40 which is the true limit. Human nature being what it is, if they posted a limit of 35, then people will regularly go 45-50 which is genuinely hazardous. This mind game is played on most roads & highways.
