Um, I'm not sure if this is the right place for that suggestion. Try hitting up Amtrak. Also, you can always check your bike. I know other Amtrak lines have bike rikes - I'm guessing the NE doesn't because of high passenger numbers.
Thanks Geefin,
I visited Amtrak's site and the most spots they allow on any train is 8.
I want to use this post to show Amtrak that there is a demand.
If there are a bunch of other people who want this fixed, I will add a contact from Amtrak customer service to follow the post.
The NEC (Northeast Corridor) is the busiest passenger line in the country. Amtrak already makes enough money because the trains are at capacity. Why would they take away seats to add bike storage?
The current passenger cars are in planning process for being phased out, anyways. It'll take many years for the new cars to come, but maybe they'll have a bit more acceptance for bicycles.
people may not realize the problems caused by bicycles in the passenger section. It is only fair to the other passengers trying to use the space to check the bike; it is really annoying when there are several bikes in a passenger car, especially if they start rolling around or flopping or block entrance and exit doors.
We, at RailTEC, are circulating two letters one to Amtrak and a second to 4th District Congressman Jim Himes about bike accommodations on Amtrak trains. We will be meeting Rosa DeLauro's staffer Lou Mangini on Wed. afternoon this week to discuss the issue (Aug. 18). Aaron Goode will set time. Email aaron.goode@gmail.com for more details.
they is no room for bicycles on the amtrak trains esp. to boston. there is high passenger ridership and with the bag limit policy that nobody adheres to it is really difficult to accomodate bicycles. @ ben there are no bicycles allowed on the northeast regional trains which servce boston-washington corridor. this is a safety issue . you can check them on the baggage trains 66/67 and pick them up at designated stations. while i understand the love of bicycles please understand that this is a safety issue!

First things first - its Amtrak policy that currently keeps bikes off trains - a discriminatory "no bicycles allowed" policy. With very few exceptions that "no bicycles allowed" policy is in place across the country, not just on the busier Northeast Corridor.
Second, twice as many passengers board Metro-North's New Haven Line than board Amtrak nationwide daily. Even with its restrictive peak hour weekday policy, Metro-North allows bicycles on its trains 7 days per week without charge.
Currently to bring a bicycle to Boston via public transportation one needs to take a Metro-North train to GCT and board a Bolt, Lucky Star or Megabus to Boston. Amtrak's "no bicycles allowed" policy clearly serves as a barrier to entry.
The time for excuses is running low; the time for policy change is now!!!
Part of living in civilized society is making compromises to accomodate other people. you'd deny seats to two other people to take one bike along in a passenger section? even metro north does not allow bicycles on peak hour trains, there isn't room to hold them.
Seems to me that a reasonable compromise is to find a way to carry bicycles in a baggage section not in a passenger section. If I were denied a seat on a train so that you could take your bike, I might well be as annoyed as you are that you can't take your bike, if not more.
or is it that your wants are more important than mine?
We are trying to delineate issues that are current and need the city's attention to resolve. Any issues prior to 2013 are being closed. If your issue remains and needs to be addressed by the city, please either re-open or open as a new See Click Fix issue. Thanks.

Seems to me that it makes sense for Amtrak to have people pay to check their bikes. That's extra $$ in their pocket.
Good luck with the cause.

They currently charge 5-10. That seems reasonable to me.

Can I bring a bike on in storage? Has anybody done this and know how to store it?
