IF SOMEONE CAGED YOU WHILE YOU WERE OUT LOOKING FOR FOOD YOU WOULD MOST LIKELY WANT TO GET OUT OF THE CAGE. Are you a wildlife management specialist? Why are you trapping animals in the first place? ITS YOUNG MAY BE RELYING ON IT TO SURVIVE and if you relocate it you could cause more harm. Please; if you respect its right to be, let it go. Or, if you found a stereo on it, bring it to the police for questioning...
Let the possum go--they are really harmless, though they always scare me....--and consider yourself to be VERY lucky that you did not catch the skunk instead--how did you think you'd be able to transport a skunk in a trap without getting super sprayed?! Not a good idea.... so thank the possum for sparing you the experience...
That video is hilarious. I'm glad to hear there's a plan if you were to catch a skunk, although I am not sure approaching a skunk with a blanket is a prudent idea (even if you are speaking to it in soothing tones). :)
Let it go. Whether female providing for her young, or a single male, they wont stay long at this time of year. Two days tops. Relocation can cause more harm than good and can be very tough on the animal. Please let it go.
What is the problem? The animals will leave anyway after the spring and you are causing harm to them and their possible offspring. Remove any compost bin and that should help. If the skunk is showing up during the day call animal control to make sure it isn't rabid. Otherwise leave them alone. You are acting like the guy from Caddy Shack. Please stop.
Guess I'll have to watch Caddy Shack. I'm fine with the possums and raccoons, though they all drive our dog crazy. The rats and the skunk(s) are, however, over the top. Will keep folks apprised. And, will alert Ranger Dan that East Rock Park has one more possums among its inhabitants.
Paul, you'd have to check this out for sure, but I seem to remember that inorder for a skunk to spray it has to lift it's tail strait up. That's why I've seen people trying to cover the skunk with a sheet when trying to catch it. In the have a heart trap it may not have enough room to lift it's tail. But do be careful because they can inflict a nasty bite.
If you want to keep the skunk out of your yard, bury chicken wire six inches deep along your fence line and leave enough exposed and tacked to the fence to keep the skunk from going over or under. Also keep your dog or cat food indoors.
