Description
At least 2 cars were broken into in the Annex Tuesday night, after midnight. There was no damage and no signs of forced entry. The car doors were left slightly open, with the contents of the center console and glove compartment emptied out. Nothing of value was taken (but identity theft is still possible).
We suspect the thieves used a device that amplifies the signal of your own key fob to open your cars remotely with no forced entry. This is called a "relay attack." Learn more: https://www.wired.com/2017/04/just-pair-11-radio-gadgets-can-steal-car/]
The ONLY THING you can do to prevent this kind of attack is to placed your key fobs:
(1) In your refrigerator or freezer to block the signal, or
(2) Purchase a key fob faraday pouch to block the signal (e.g. from Amazon)
Until then: make sure your lights are on at night, and that you don't leave anything of value in your car! Be vigilant and watch out for your neighbors!
