Description

The city recently re-did the roads where the problem is occurring. The intersection used to be a 4 way stop for good reasons, and after the construction was complete, they removed stop signs for cars traveling down Western Ave in either direction. This may help with the flow of traffic during certain hours, but is very dangerous for anyone heading south on West 101st St. and making a left hand turn onto Western Ave at any hour of the day! When coming to a stop at the intersection, you cannot see any cars coming from the left side (so cars heading west on Western Ave) There is a home there right on the corner as well as a light pole that completely blocks vision of anything heading your direction and can only be visible once you have started making the turn (thus once you're in the middle of the intersection). If that isn't bad enough, cars speed well above the speed limit on Western Ave, making this very dangerous and a recipe for many accidents to come. Having to gamble on if theres a car coming from the left and proceeding with the left hand turn and then looking back to your right to see if there are any cars coming from the other direction and then looking back to the left to the direction you're heading is very uneasy. I'm 21, have had my license for 5 years and have great vision. I have never experienced something like this or have had the obligation to report a crazy intersection like this for the safety of others. Nearly every time I've made this turn I've had to accelerate very quickly to get out of the way of oncoming traffic.
