Description
I drove thru the intersection of Atwater St & Chatham St today a little 4pm and there was a large group of kids (over 20) playing basketball and on bikes playing in the middle of the intersection. They were holding up traffic and not getting out of the way of moving cars.
This street is used as a race track by some drivers and at some point one of these kids is going to get hit by a car. When is LCI going to take the hoop away? These Kids dont need to play in the street when a park is one block away.

So I guess what some of you are saying is that it's fine for young kid 15 and younger to play in the middle of the street because it traffic calming or that it STOPS them from selling drugs and that they will not car jack you.
This is the same area when a young man was shot awhile back. This is the same area where cars blow thru stops sign and race up and down the street.

Were you able to get down the street or did you have to back up and drive around the block? Did you make it to where you wanted to go without getting car jacked, robbed, or forced to buy drugs? Did anybody shoot at you?
If you want to live your life afraid of every child in your neighborhood then that is your choice. I'll tell you this, though. They are out there having fun and living their lives as best they can while you're at home locked in your house complaining on a website about your neighbors because they inconvenienced you a little bit and you're scared.
I'm done with this conversation. Goodbye.

@ When we were kids
These kids don't yell Car they stand there and give you the stink eye like they are waiting for you to say something to them. I don't think any of these kids are paying car taxes or other fee for the use of the road, so why should we shut down street on weekends for the so the can play in the street.
I just have to assume these kids are too lazy to walk one block to the park or too stupid to know how to get there and back.

I don't understand what your thing about being car jacked, robbed, or buying drugs is all about? NO nobody shoot at me, but do I know if any of these kids carry guns. No i don't do you? Read the news of whats going on in New Haven with guns
I'm not afraid of every child in your neighborhood but when they are in large groups one new knows what could happen.
Why can't the have fun and living their lives in one of the parks in the neighborhood. If I'm home locked my house, how would i be driven down the street haven to deal with this problem?

Jon Doe: Think we know each other & live in the same neighborhood - just different Alderman. You should see the message I got directed at me on another issue because I contradicted "Mr. Ewing" on this one.
We're not just sitting here throwing arrows from our living room couch, people. These are real quality of life issues we're talking about. LOL, this is not a group of happy little children playing hopscotch or stickball on the street. Take a drive down that street when one of them is smoking out the neighborhood doing a burnout or any one of the other cute little acts they're performing. Most importantly, know what you're saying before you say it.

Yes your right it does come down to real quality of life issues. There is a house in that block that went into forecloser and the bank tryed to sell it off this past winter and not one person showed up. Now it sits there with weeds growing in the yard. Who would want to buy it when they can't even drive down the street without coming into contact with these kids or the guys doing burnouts.
LCI refuses to take down the basketball hoop. Laurie Lopez stated to me that LCI wouldn't take the Hoop away because there is a stop sign there and you have to stop any ways. My question is what happends when a driver blows thru that stop sign and hits on of these kids? There is a park a block away where these kids cant play safe all day long.

to be totally honest, i think this issue is one of the most ridiculous i've ever seen on see click fix.
drivers should allow residents to truly live in their own neighborhoods. cars become more and more efficient and easy to operate at fast speeds, and drivers are often unaware of the fact that they are travelling through dense neighborhoods. i don't expect to race through your neighborhood at high speeds, mr. "jon doe"
if you don't want to encounter pedestrians, stay on the highway or in the depressing, boring, desolate suburbs.
love,
a proud new haven resident
