This intersection has been a concern for years; Hopefully this report will get some response this time

The situation is made worse by people at 107 Hazelhurst who park along Homestead thus forcing anyone driving south to be on the wrong side of the road. I almost got hit by a late model gray Chevy truck doing about 40 on the wrong side of the road there last night

I very much agree with Guest. There should be no parking allowed in the street anywhere near this intersection. It is EXTREMELY dangerous having to move into the oncoming lane, especially since you can't see it!

Even if there is a stop sign added, the parking should be banned. Strict enforcement is needed, at least for a while after the changes.

107 Hazelhurst has been turned into the APD many times but nothing is ever done about the problem. Many people had close calls at that intersection because of the parking. As for Bill at apd Traffic Eng. he has always been to busy to check out this dangerous situation in the pass.

Many times I have been on my bike crossing Homestead from Hazelhurst. Yesterday I stopped to see if there were any cars but still almost got hit due to the drivers coming up on the hill going too fast. Not GOOD. It scared the heck out of me knowing that I stopped for just that dangerious situation.

The picture shows the intersection coming from Western Ave. It is even more dangerous when you are heading out to Western Ave. That is a small hill up with the intersection just as you crest the hill. I have watched many people speeding up Homestead then see brake lights as they crest and hit that intersection. Wish they could post a pic from the other direction to get a full perspective.

Sat 3/25/13 A vehicle with license plate FHN1211 parked on the corner of Hazelhurst and Homestead. The vehicle was there at 7:00 a.m. and is still there at 11:29 a.m. makeing it impossible to drive on that road. A accident waiting to happen. when will we see some kind of sign or police enforcement?

I agree. This is very dangerous. I always get nervous making that turn because cars on coming cars can not see because of the hill. A stop sign or something is needed.

Joe makes some good comments above. Why should it take 32 days to get a response from APD traffic-- especially after they've been made aware of this issue before? The council member has also been made aware of this repeatedly. Does Bill always check with politicians before taking appropriate actions?

You should be Jumping for JOY that they are even lookingt at it in only 32 days. I have been TRYING to get the Town OF Colonie to STOP the truck Traffic On Maplewood Ave. Since 2007. Our Road is Clearly marked with 4 ton weight limit signs! ( Colonie town law says this is G.V.W NOT the load your carrying) we have everything UP to and Including Tractor trailers.On this Street Dailey. In Fact Today was one of SEVERAL times I have seen an Overweight Vehicle From the City of Albany D.G.S. Central Maintainence on the street. P.S. Kraft Ave. is a DESIGNATED truck route to By Pass the residential Area!

Since I live on Hazelhurst, I use the intersection of Hazelhurst and Homestead frequently and agree that it is an accident waiting to happen. It is impossible to see on-coming traffic when making a left turn onto Hazelhurst from Homestead. I've never had an accident there, but realize it could happen every time I make that turn. Thanks for listening to my point of view.

Could a stop sign be placed at that corner wher that green house sits?

OK, another 30 days since "Bill" acknowledged anything. What is the current status? An update should be posted AT LEAST once a month for long-term issues. Any less than that says nothing is being done.

Joe is correct. This issue was assigned to the Traffic division on 5/11/2013 that's 2 months ago. Is the APD Traffic Division understaffed? Are they still waiting for comment from the local politician?

We're still waiting for something to be done here. This spot is the crest of a hill, an obvious blind spot exists. A couple blocks away on a straight stretch, they did put in a stop sign.

Bill Trudeau has been evaluating this since last June. Has anything been done yet?

With Albany Police department's new Traffic Safety initiative, this is certainly an intersection Lt. Kirwin and his group could study for line of sight issues

This was posted 3 years ago and nothing has been done yet. Although a stop sign was put in at Cottag Ave where there is a clear line of sight.

SIDEWALKS on Homestead St and Russell Road are basic safety needs. We have been advocating for decades but nothing has happened. I urge everyone concerned to personally contact DGS, their alderman, the neighborhood engagement officer, and anyone else in city government who will listen. Where does the buck stop on this critical issue?

If you look above, Traffic engineering referred this to the local common council member. Sidewalks are a huge expense while this stop sign is a relatively simple fix

It has now been four years. Either a clear "NO" should be posted, or a clear plan of action. This is ridiculous. The council member for Hazelhurst is Frank Commisso Jr, who is now running for mayor. It's inevitable that someone will be killed at that intersection someday. Does Frank want that blood on his hands? Did Bill Trudeau ever follow through with Frank? Is Bill Trudeau even around any more? RSVP, Albany!!

Homestead Street is a residential road, feeding homes in the neighborhood. It begins at Western Avenue and ends at Elmhurst/Blanchard Aves. For the most part Homestead Street is used as a residential connector street and not used as a commuter through roadway since it does not connect directly with other major roadways outside of the neighborhood. A major intersection safety factor at this intersection is that there are no eastbound or westbound approaches, meaning Hazlehurst Ave in both directions are one way streets away from the intersection.
We have conducted several reviews for the requested STOP signs on Homestead Street at Hazlehurst Avenue. Our review does not show a warrant for adding STOP signs at this intersection. In addition we are concerned if STOP signs were installed in the northbound direction, there could be an increase for rear end crashes due to the vertical curve in the road. A motorist may not expect to see another stopped at a non-typical location for STOP signs and could have a difficult time braking after cresting the vertical curve.
Motor Vehicle crash reviews were conducted on a few occasions. There have been a total of seven crashes in the vicinity of this intersection since 1996, and none since 2011. The number of crashes over the 19 year time period does not represent a crash problem. A comment mentioned near misses, unfortunately, near misses are not reported and there is no way to quantify these.
Over time, Traffic Engineering has performed work to alert motorists to existing conditions on Homestead St. Some of these items include: intersection warning signs, driveway warning sign, Signs to remind motorists that they are sharing the road with pedestrians, Edge of Road pavement markings to define the pavement edges, Stop Signs at the three way intersection with Cottage Ave, Children at Play signs.

Although it may just be conjecture, many believe that the number of housing units developed along Russell, Krumkill and Blessing has increased traffic on Magazine, Homestead and Glynn Sts and that Homestead is used as a commuter roadway
