As well as brighter street lights all along the Avenue.

As sad as this is we can't have a crosswalk on every corner, as bad as the traffic is now because of the mayors great idea to go from four lanes to two lanes can you amagine how bad it will be with a crosswalk on every corner, pedestrians need to obey the laws as well as cars, it was dark out and he had dark cloths on, I feel bad for the driver who probably never saw this person until the impact

Not on every corner just at intersections where there are apt complexes or elderly housing would be a start....

Sad someone lost their life today. I hope we can continue to make infrastructure improvements to mitigate future tragedies.

Wayne is a narrow minded apologist for the car culture, who isn't concerned about vehicles being operated by unlicensed drivers, driving uninspected or uninsured cars. Let's face it - speed limits are routinely BROKEN, the stripes on the pavement (yellow AND white) are often ignored. Cell phone use is rampant. Turn signals are no longer a thing. But Wayne will blame the pedestrian, automatically. A paradigm shift is long overdue. I've suggested crosswalks (for YEARS) at BWBC meetings and, more recently, at North Avenue Task Force meetings. Its obvious that there is more housing and more cars, bicyclists and pedestrians. Accommodate accordingly.

Tonight an elderly pedestrian taking a stroll with his dog got hit and killed by a vehicle heading south on N. Ave. This is partly due to the lack of a crosswalk at that GMT stop connecting to the GMT stop on the other side of N. Avenue. Every day myself and others trying to cross N. Ave have to play 'frogger' because drivers refuse to stop for anyone except for an occasional few who deserve a friendly wave for allowing one to cross. You have elderly housing all over this area including Thayer Housing who many try to cross some even in wheelchairs. Everytime I get off the bus and try to cross over to the condos/Thayer, I think and tell people it's only a matter of time before this happens. Well it happened tonight and not only injured someone minding his own business with his beloved dog...it killed them.
Maybe with a new crosswalk, a simple sign with the yellow LEDS like they use at UVM Medical Center for the stop signs.

How can you make those statements about me when you don't know me, if you read the story you will see what I said was that fact, I agree with what you say about many of the cars breaking the laws but you also never said how bikes and pedestrians also break the laws. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. The city also needs to place crosswalks in a safe place, I am working with the media about were the city has placed crosswalks in unsafe locations, futher south on north Ave there are crosswalks were they allow vehicles to park right up to the crosswalk, that makes it impossible to see the pedestrian until they are in traffic. Much of the blame needs to go to the city engineers that plan these designs

There is already an approved design for a crosswalk at this location. It was funded by VAOT and slated to be built in summer 2018, along with 4 other crosswalks on North Ave.

Issue acknowledged. The Police Department issued this press release about the incident last night:

On Thursday, December 20, at approximately 5:05 PM, a 61-year-old male pedestrian last known to reside Winooski was struck and killed by a southbound vehicle in the vicinity of 1205 North Avenue.

Multiple units from the Burlington Police Department, the Burlington Fire Department, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene. Crash investigators assigned to the Burlington Police Department made a preliminary reconstruction of the collision.

Police investigation suggests that the pedestrian was crossing between intersections during low light conditions. Preliminary calculations suggest the driver was driving below the posted speed limit and obeying all applicable traffic laws. He stopped immediately, remained at the scene, and gave consent to search his phone and vehicle for evidence of distraction. None was found, and no criminality is suspected at this time. The investigation continues.

The pedestrian’s dog was also struck in the crash; police removed the injured animal to a veterinary hospital, where it is currently in critical condition.

The name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Dale, you have zero clue what you're talking about... Complaining that DPW was too busy installing safe infrastructure at other crosswalks, so they delayed this one? Federal funding & right of ways for brand new crosswalks take a lot more time than enhancements to existing ones.

Burlington, VT – On Thursday, December 20, at approximately 5:05 p.m., a 61-year-old male pedestrian walking a dog was struck and killed by a southbound vehicle in the vicinity of 1205 North Avenue. Police investigation suggests that the pedestrian was crossing between intersections, in a location during low light conditions. Preliminary calculations suggest the driver was driving below the posted speed limit and obeying all applicable traffic laws.

In response, Department of Public Works Director Chapin Spencer issued the following statement:

“This is a tragic incident, and I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Pedestrian fatalities are exceedingly rare in Burlington, and this event reminds us of why we are actively working to make our City even safer. During my leadership the City has installed 11 crosswalks with rapid-flashing beacons, constructed 4 sidewalks where no pedestrian path existed and installed pedestrian signals at four other intersections. The City has also re-built nearly 6 miles of sidewalks over the last two years, tripling past average production, and in 2018 added 24 curb extensions making pedestrian crossings shorter.

“As part of this City-wide work, in the summer of 2017 the City settled on a three lane configuration for North Ave enabling us to advance final project design of five new crosswalks with rapid-flashing beacons along this corridor. This scope of work, at a total cost of approximately $330K, includes a new crosswalk for the intersection at Poirier Place close to where this tragic accident occurred. While initially projected for construction in fall of 2018, we have worked to advance the extensive planning involved, which includes federal grant requirements, permitting, obtaining temporary rights-of-way and utility coordination. We completed all of this planning work in November of this year, and as a result, we will be starting construction to install these five crosswalks in spring of 2019.”

Now a completion date of early fall 2019. They ran out of parts after Ward St.

Early Fall? That seems crazy... they started this project at the end of April, all the cement work was done ages ago. Seems like they just need to hook up the solar, lights, etc... but they ran out of parts?

The contractor has completed installation of the sidewalk ramps, curbs, and pole foundations throughout the project. The contractor is awaiting the arrival of some materials needed to complete the project, such as the light poles and the signage. Due to the long lead time, these items are anticipated to arrive in July though were ordered once the contract was finalized. At that time, these materials will be installed along with the flashing beacons and the crosswalk striping. There will be minimal construction activity through June and the majority of July.
