Thats becasue it is the only rotary I know that doesnt follow rotary rules; therefore confuses the driver. Signage is needed at the island, after the driver already passed the Stop sign, but before he/she crosses Northbound Fells traffic.

Agree. Sounds like the entire circle can use some new signage, not just for the southbound traffic.

The whole area from rotary to intersection at Savin Street needs to be looked at. Extremely dangerous rotary followed by people speeding way over the 25 mph speed limit.

Mergek is absolutely right. We drove through this traffic circle this morning around 7:15 and it was a complete mess. I don't know what it takes to turn this into a lighted intersection, but it might be worthwhile.

Please dont put lights here. Fells is the maion road, Highland Ave is the secondary. If people are patient and know the rules of the road, it can work smooth.

Also, more times than not, there is a state trooper across from Amerige Park ticketing the speeders. Its a perfect speed trap with such a low speed limit (yes I know its across from the park, but have you ever really gone 25 mile per hour....)

The cormer of Fells and Savin is a terrible intersection. Peoiple just have to be careful drivers and walkers. The cross at that corner reminds me how dangerous that intersection is everytime Im there.

Priscot, I hear you, but if people were patient and knew the rules of the road, this SeeClickFix thread wouldn't exist. A signal light might not be an option, or the right solution, but the best way to find the right solution is to lay out a bunch of different ones. Simple signage is another. Unfortunately, assuming people will do the right thing is almost never the solution.

I agree about the intersection of Fells and Savin. A few raised crosswalks might help with speed control. Lots of opportunities for raised crosswalks in this area with the two parks.

Excellent sugestion with the raised sidewalks, provided they are clearly visible to drivers. (The one down the street on Pleasant St is NOT)

Hi....Councillor Matheson is the City Councillor in this ward. He has been working to address the safety issues at this rotary. I would recommend contacting him and giving him your input and see if there is some resolution that can be reached.

I have brought this issue to Malden Traffic, but as a state road there is nothing more we can do locally. I also brought this to the attention of Rep. Donato and Katherine Clark and will continue to follow up at the state level.

Thanks, John. Hopefully with your input things will change. I've lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years and have seen too many accidents due to speeding vehicles and/or non compliant drivers.

I emailed Senator Clark about this thread, and she replied that one of her directors is going to reach out to Councillor Matheson about this traffic circle. Hopefully we'll get an update soon.

Did anything happen with this last year? The descriptions of the intersection as dangerous at rush hour still sound true to me.

When staying on Fellsway, heading south, it's unclear as to whether there is one lane or two as you go through the circle, adding to the danger.

I agree with Alan this area still very dangerous. One thing Malden can do is make sure Highland Ave southbound into this intersection is kept to one lane. Currently motorist make the single southbound lane into two lanes making an already bad situation worse.
John Matheson can you update us as to what you have been working on to correct this situation??

The problem of course is that this isn't actually a "traffic circle" or "roundabout" as much as a break in the median divided Fellsway to allow Highland to cross through. The best solution would actually be to reconstruct this intersection as a true roundabout and tweak the alignment of Glenwood St to intersect at a 90-degree angle slightly further back from the main intersection. And of course having Stop Signs on the wrong side of the crosswalk is both unsafe and improper design.

why has this unresolved issue been closed? this intersection continues to be dangerous and our elected officials both state and city have been ignoring the problem. please keep open until the city can work wirth the state to provide a resolution.

This "rotary" that isn't is an absolute nightmare. If it looks a like a rotary and quacks like a rotary, people will assume it is a rotary and ignore any other signage. Clearly this is not a Malden issue, it is a state issue since the Fellsway is a state-owned road. Please let us know who we can contact at the state level in order to get this fixed. I am a cyclist and I take my life in my hands every day when using this intersection.

Jason Lewis state senator 617-722-1206, his office has supposedly already talked to the city about the issue! State rep Paul Donato 617-722-2180 I think he has tried in past but got nowhere. Would not hurt to give DCR a call 617-626-4973. Governor Baker's office 617-725-4005. Report drivers breaking the law to Mass state police 781-396-0100.
The more calls these offices get from multiple residents the more likely the issue will get looked at. It is obvious are local city government has not been able to find a resolution with the state and DCR.

Besides this intersection needing to be converted into a proper modern roundabout, what this whole segment of roadway needs is a "road diet". The geometrics encourage higher speeds and since it really does not need to be 4+ lanes in between the 2 lane segments north and south bike lanes can be defined, parking can be formalized, and even bus stops can be added.

There appears to have been a very serious accident here two nights ago. I haven't been able to find any reporting on that accident so I hope everyone is okay. It's sad to think that it could take something like this to encourage change, but it's sadder to think that no change will come at all and another accident could happen.

I am the original author of this ticket and have decided to close it. During the two years that the ticket has been open, there has been lots of conversation about this intersection, and even some recent improvements. This SeeClickFix ticket has done its job to get some of the city's attention -- if we need a new ticket in the future, I certainly encourage opening one.
