Description

I reported a cockroach problem in my apartment on 1/1/19 through the Jefferson Hills Resident portal website. The following day I find a a piece of paper underneath my door that says the maintenance crew will come by on 1/3/19 for inspection/treatment. The paper also said I did not have to be home at the time of the treatment, but if not home to leave a note explaining the issue and where I've seen the cockroaches, which I did. Also contained was a list of "to-do's" before their arrival, such as remove items from the drawers, wipe down counter tops, which I did as well.

Nowhere did it mention what kind of treatment they would be using, potential harm it would cause, what bugs they were treating, etc. All what was mentioned was to cover everything you removed from the cabinets with a cloth, presumably so whatever they were spraying does not get on them.

The morning of 1/3 I call the Jefferson Hills management office in hopes to learn more about what actually maintenance will be doing before they come in and do it. I asked specifically what treatment they will be using and the potential health risks. The woman I spoke with on my phone was not able to answer any of these questions, all she said was that it was "safe". I asked if she could connect me to the maintenance crew and she said she couldn't. She instructed me to call back at the end of the day after they treated my apartment, which is no help to me at all.

In my opinion, this is a big health risk and it's the management office's responsibility to be able to adequately address my questions and not shove me off. I deserve the right to know what chemicals they will be using and the potential harm. Even when I asked if she could connect me to maintenance she said she couldn't, which I don't think is acceptable. In addition, I asked if the crew could call me directly before they apply any treatment to gain my consent and she said no. I think there needs to be some changes, although it's a separate pest control company that inspects/treats the apartments Jefferson hills and this company need to be better aligned. Also, like I mentioned above, Jefferson hills should still be able to provide me the information I need and specifically address my health concerns.

Thanks,
Andrew Yoder
