Thanks Terry, I don't believe from my experience there will be a follow up though from the police. I hope I am wrong and will also keep reporting license plates. These people need their license suspended. It's a privilege not a right.

I thought action is taken by the department of public works.

If you have the plate number and a discription of the person, contact iDEAL Vallejo's Officer Gomez. He was brought on for cases like this.

The problem is the fine is only 1,000.00 maximum. 6 months in jail is not the answer especially if he is the bread winner for his family which could create more homeless etc.. 6 months of community service is more appropriate. One prosecution out of far too many with enough evidence is hardly a win.

Law Abider, agreed, one prosecution is not enough. I didn’t want to make disparaging comments against the article right off the bat but, $30,000 to clean up his dumping? (Did he dump nuclear waste?). And why didn’t the city attorney try to recoup that cost? Also the fact that this prosecution got a standing ovation is kind of funny. It shows how desperate this town is for any results. Ideal Vallejo and the city attorney had a goal of getting 20 of these cases into the system, but only had seven referred to him. And the discussion I had with the City Attorney, one was a homeless man cited for littering, fine was reduced to $250, it went right up to the trial date and then he didn’t show.... The other “successful” case is the one mentioned here, the rest are still in process.
So should we give the program a little more time to be effective? Or do you just want to squash it and have absolutely nothing in this town as far as enforcement or détournement again? Short of this city getting a huge infusion of money, and a fullly staffed police dept., what would you suggest? Even when the city does something that you’ve been hounding them to do, it’s still not good enough. What do you want? Can you possibly suggest something feasible?

Artsem, I'm just speaking from my experience of having complete evidence including photos and witnesses willing to show up in court on more than one occasion and just getting brushed off by the police. I have no clue where you think I would want to squash something that needs to be much stronger. Quite the opposite. All I do here is complain about litterers and dumpers , that is my pet peeve that I have to constantly have to stand up for some odd reason. I have very little sympathy for people whom constantly trash and disrespect our potentially beautiful city and neighbors.

Yep, the same thing happened to me. Turned in photos of illegal dumper in the act, including his vehicle license plate number and his face. Followed up my post on SCF with several comments asking the progress, and was reassured that they were investigating. Then after seeing city codes allowing you to claim half the fine as your reward, I asked about it at the City Manager’s office. No one had any clue about the code I was referring to or how I would claim that reward. That’s when I found out that Vallejo was not prosecuting illegal dumping at the time. The City’s attorney couldn’t recall one case coming through the system. So I realized if they don’t prosecute you can’t claim your reward. That’s when I went on my illegal dumping campaign here and on next-door. In about six months, codes were revised so you only can claim half the PAID fine, and they kicked off the IDEAL Program by hiring Officer Gomez. I would like to see the program succeed also. But even when following up with Officer Gomez in person CSS about iDeal’s successes, he was not able to give any numbers. ( honestly I don’t know why he couldn’t tell me) Once again I was referred to the city manager and city attorney. That’s when I got the numbers of seven cases coming through the pipe. The city attorney was very forthcoming about every case that was in the pipe right now.

So iDEAL’s one year anniversary will be coming soon and really need to examine the program’s successes and weaknesses. Budgetarily is the position justified? Would that position be better utilized in another area of the city that is short on staff or policing? Would the money be better spent on buying cameras, placed throughout notorious dumping locations? Or maybe the city could buy one of those mobile camera towers that move to high crime areas? I want the program to succeed, but accountability and follow up need to happen.

Over a year later did anything happen? Doubtful. Closing.
