Description
On North Union street several bike lane protector bases are loose and get pushed into the bike lane. This has been a reoccurring issue last winter and during this winter. The loose bases make the bike lane useless when there is snow on the street. The bases are not visible and are angled. When the front wheel hits the base, the wheel slips off and there is a good chance the rider will fall. This happen to me last year on my cargo bike with my children on the bike. Also the bases that have no post on them create an issue when there is snow on the street. When trying to exit the bike lane to the left, one never knows where the bases are located. If the wheel hits a base the same effect on the front wheel is experienced and can lead to a crash. The condition of the protected bike lane is counter productive to it's intend. In the winter, the design does not protect the bike riders, it puts them in more danger due to the increase chance of a crash. In addition riders start riding in the car lane, which gives car drivers the justified impression that spending money on protected bike lanes is a useless investment. I suggest that you either completely remove the bases for the winter or restore the protected bike lane to its original condition. In case the protected bike lane is restored, you will need to a better job maintaining the plowing and deal with the frozen puddles.

"And will happen every year the city utilizes these cheap plastic barriers"
People who can't drive in one lane shouldn't be driving. Complaining about barriers being hit only justifies their existence.

Its not that they cant stay in there lane, Its that they don't care. Watched many people just drive down the road hitting each and every one. Doesn't help that DPW is making the streets too narrow, The Fire Dept. needs 14ft and that's all DPW is willing to give them.
Given the the current City Councilors, prospective City Councilors Burlington has running (example is Paco DeFrancis who wants to eliminate on-street parking in Burlington) a Mayor who doesn't care about Burlington's citizens, a Police Chief who neglects traffic violations, and a DPW director who has no idea how to run public works, this City is doomed.

"Its not that they cant stay in there lane, Its that they don't care."
Does it matter? If they will destroy city infrastructure, then they shouldn't have the privilege to drive.
"Doesn't help that DPW is making the streets too narrow, "
The bike lane has been there for years. Before the protected lane, it was pretty common to have to share the bike lane with cars. Amazingly, that doesn't really happen anymore.
"this City is doomed."
I'm sorry you think the city is doomed. If you look at the bright side for Paco's crazy idea, Union Street would get a much wider travel lane.

I use the bike lane as well as my kid who rides his bike every day to school ...even in this weather.
We can discuss this and support city staff (or not) in a civil way to best coexist...Best to all and kudos to all who care and are passionate about our city

Children riding their bikes in the winter is not dooming the city, it's just unnecessarily putting a child in a dangerous situation, frostbite, slippery road surface, exposing them to dangerous riding/driving conditions. I do not condone a parent advocating a small child ride their bicycle or being forced into a bike seat during winter. Watched a parent fall once trying to ride over an icy surface, they had just dropped their young child off at preschool, if the child were in the bike seat, they could of been seriously hurt. Its not worth a broken arm.
The City is doomed for a multitude of reasons.

If a parent doesn't own an automobile, how does the child get to school? Not everyone is wealthy enough to afford the privilege of car ownership.
"I do not condone a parent advocating a small child ride their bicycle or being forced into a bike seat during winter."
You don't have to condone it. But you also don't get to tell parents what is worth doing and what isn't.
"Watched a parent fall once trying to ride over an icy surface"
Hence the need for maintained and protected bike lanes?

You can walk or take the bus.
The parent fell on ice in parking lot entrance going 5 mph. A bike lane would not have helped.

"Just a note, the only "car lanes" in the city are on VT127 and I-189"
- yet we still see cyclists on 127 and BPD does nothing.
The city is doomed due to a mayor encouraging too much building in the City, an already over stressed infrastructure, misappropriated funds from DPW, incompetent leadership, an stressed housing market, increased tax burden to homeowners, and an out of control school budget. 2020 is going to be a rough year for Burlington when people start to feel the tax burden.

"yet we still see cyclists on 127 and BPD does nothing."
And yet, this very SeeClickFix is about the protected bike lane, so needed because people are driving in it. Cyclists on 127 clearly are breaking the law, but they really aren't endangering anyone but themselves. Scofflaw motorists destroying city infrastructure are the danger here.
"You can walk or take the bus."
Or I can bike. My bike has 4 inch wide studded tires. The weight/traction ratio means I'm getting way more traction than any car out there.
"The parent fell on ice in parking lot entrance going 5 mph. A bike lane would not have helped."
I get it. You're concerned. But you also think the city is doomed because infrastructure is overburdened (I think you're right that it's overburdened!). One way to alleviate growing pains on city streets is to have less cars on the road, especially for short trips.

Thank you DPW staff for picking up the damaged pieces in the bike lane!
Please come out early in the spring to replace and repair
Most appreciate your work!!

Are you actually suggesting that someone who cant afford a car is going to be able to purchase bicycles and 4 inch wide studded tires for each member of their family so they can ride in the winter?
Not to mention a car can be very affordable and there are non-profits who can help people obtain a vehicle.

Burlingtonian: Walmart carries fatbikes. There are also nonprofits in the city to help people obtain bikes.
My point is that it's not really any of your business how other people get around.

I'm not sure how you're getting that. I am insisting that we hold bad drivers accountable. I'm advocating for building and maintaining infrastructure that promotes alternatives to automobiles (walking, biking, bussing) and keeps drivers from being confused or doing the wrong thing.
There are people out where the best way to get around is to drive. Cars are not villains, but we do need to ensure that people don't abuse their privileges.
