Description

There are two lanes going eastbound on College as it intersects with S. Candler Rd. However, the left lane through arrow painted on the road is very faded. The left turn arrow that is painted on the road is easier to see. Is this lane now a left turn lane only? It is confusing to people who have lived here a long time and are accustomed to having the option of being able to go straight through the intersection in that lane. I worry about getting a ticket or having an accident since it is no longer clearly marked as a through lane. If it is ok to also use it as a through lane, can the through arrow be repainted so that it is clearly marked?

Yes, this is now a left turn only lane. Supposedly more signage is coming to make this clearer, but you can no longer legally turn left there.

Since few drivers turn left at this intersection, and they could be accommodated with a brief left-turn signal cycle, making this lane left-turn only when there is a full driving lane on the other side of the intersection serves only to inhibit the flow of traffic at what is proving to be the most backed-up intersection in town during afternoon rush hours. Instead of adding more signage, why don't we just keep this lane as a through lane?

Personally I agree with that. That right lane gets really backed up fast, sometimes all the way to McDonough.

It's all part of Decatur's road diet plans, like what was done along W Howard. Sometime in the (supposedly) near future, they will also be reducing Commerce to one lane as well. I believe the idea is to encourage people to take alternative transportation like bikes. I have a feeling all it will do is turn Decatur into a traffic nightmare.

There was a conversation on NextDoor with Renae Madison right after the light signals were changed. If I recall, Hugh Saxon was going to correct the painting and signage to make it very clear the straight option was eliminated. Maybe they are still considering bringing it back, as it has been a really long time to make it more clear.

Certainly something needs to be done to complete the project one way or another. I agree with Becca though, it isn't looking like their plan is going to end well.

Absolutely agree that an arrow should be painted allowing (again) a straight through option. The left lane eastbound sits empty, while the right lane backs up unnecessarily. Impatient citizens, traffic weary, make a break for it in the left lane, throwing caution to the wind!
