I just took a walk around Lake Merritt and was dismayed to see all of the tents that have popped up around the Lake. This is a jewel of Oakland, and we are allowing it to become a tent city. I am not immune to the plight of homeless people, but I do not accept public camping as the solution. It is an eyesore to the city, it is unsanitary, and I would like this to be a place that I feel comfortable allowing my teenaged children to walk around without me. Right now I do not. I am asking the city to address this...camping is not okay around Lake Merritt.

It's real blight resulting from a tangle of homelessness and demands on public resources. I'm more sympathetic to the homeless who are mentally & physically disabled and to the homeless who do NOT disrespect each other or the public at large. It may take COORDINATED regional, state, federal, non-profit efforts to address and ameliorate this unsanitary, demoralizing mess that requires attention to health and housing realities. UNTIL THEN PERHAPS AN OAKLAND GOV'T AND NON-PROFIT ENFORCEMENT/PUBLIC SAFEFY APPROACH IS THE ONLY PRACTICAL COURSE OF ACTION. Hopefully that approach would take a live and let live approach toward the less culpable homeless who make efforts to police themselves and/or are incapable health-wise and a VERY FIRM ENFORCEMENT APPROACH to those who cavalierly litter, trash, and deficate on the rest of us literally and figuratively. Perhaps a first step is to make trash and sanitary receptacle/options available and come down hard on those who still flaunt their defiance and utter lack of respect.
