I've watched the Tram attendants who mostly do get out of the tram to open the locked gate now to let in those with bikes and baby carriages, which is great. They must be in the cabin to monitor that if the one door (where there is no turnstile) is open, no one just walks on. However, it would be nice if they could leave that door opposite the reqularly open door, just a little bit ajar. It doesn't need to be wide open, just enough to keep non-paying riders from slipping in, while the locked gate is being attended. Perhaps this will be a help with some cross ventilation. Can RIOC/Tram personnel try this out?
