I live on Winchester Ave. and I spoke with several of my neighbors about this proposed skate park and we have a lot of questions and concerns about putting a skate park in at this location. We genuinely hope there will be public hearings to discuss the proposal.

What are the concerns?

How noisy will the skate park be? Particularly since our houses back up against the canal trail and the park. What will the hours of use be? Dawn to dusk? Til midnight? 24 hours? How will it be managed and maintained? Will there be bright lighting at night to facilitate night use of the skate park? As it is, Scantlebury Park is poorly maintained. There is no shortage of trash (chip bags, nip bottles, soda cans, styrofoam food containers) blowing around the park. The grass isn’t really grass - mostly just weeds that have spread. People park their cars in the park on the “grass” all summer long, despite the no vehicles allowed sign. Frankly, I don’t see how the city is going to be able to take this on and do it successfully. It would be great to have Scantlebury Park actually look like a park before we take on a big transformation like a skate park.

Those are all good questions. I'll try to answer a few here.

Noise: Skateparks are not very noisy. The ramps and ground will be smooth concrete which makes the sound of skate wheels almost undetectable. It is different than the abrasive noise you hear of skatewheels on city sidewalks.

Hours: Edgewood skatepark is open till 10:00 PM. I would assume timing here would take into account neighborhood concerns and aspirations. More people later in the night has added safety to Edgewood park at night. Trail neighbors might want the same benefit.

Garbage: The skate community has come to taking cleaning up after themselves seriously. You can go check out Edgewood to see how clean it is left. Litterers are shamed in the skate community in New Haven and folks clean up after those that do.

I would ask non skaters in Edgewood about how they feel about the effect on Edgewood park at large for an understanding of how this community can solve for the lack of stewardship that you seem to be concerned about in Scantlebury Park.

If the skatepark is going to be built, it would be great if some other parallel improvements could be made to Scantlebury park, like improved grass and landscaping, plantings or even flowers, permanent/fixed trash cans (the current ones are just blue polyethylene barrels that blow over in high winds); perhaps some fencing or other barrier to keep cars from jumping the curb and parking on the grounds despite the no parking signs. Making these general improvements to the park would go a long way to getting buy-in for the skatepark from others in the surrounding area / neighborhood. Make it a win-win proposal for all.
