This happens every day at just about every red light in New Haven, all along Chapel, on Ferry St, etc... because many people in New Haven are insensitive, selfish and not punished for this infraction, there is no incentive to stop at a red light. The NHPD does not appear to put out patrol cars to enforce this, although they should. Red light cameras have been shot down several times in the past few years in the state legislature. Even with most of our local legislators's support, the CT ACLU has lobbied hard against them, saying it's a privacy issue. Also, ticket revenue in NH goes to the state, not the city, so there is little incentive for the PD to ticket. That is another law that needs to be changed in Hartford. You, and anyone else who cares, should write to every lawmaker, lobby our yet-to-be-elected ones, and fight hard against these people who call it a privacy issue. This is ridiculous - we are videotaped on every street, every highway, bridge, tollbooth, Walmart, the supermarket, etc... What is the difference if our faces are photographed when we are breaking the law? Next time the RLC legislation comes up, make sure your voice is heard, in person, even. IN the meantime, I agree that traffic-calming measures need ot be installed by the city to force drivers to slow down.

Thanks for the comments Albert and L. I spent about 15 minutes this morning sitting and watching the intersection before work and I agree that the yellow could be a bit longer. That being said, I hope doing so would not increase vehicle speeds as more people try to squeeze through. A speed bump would be fantastic but given the volume of traffic and average speed on Congress, it probably won't happen.

Good info L, I was not aware that ticket revenue doesn't go to our city. I'm all for protecting civil liberties and I also value privacy, but like you I fail to see how these cameras violate that. If drivers stop as they are supposed to, they should have no cause for concern about being recorded.

This issue should remain open until addressed. Without information on the level of enforcement activity specifically for red light running here, there is no way to have accountability or action.

If you want to see change on this, please call the Mayor (203) 946-8200 and Rob Smuts (203) 946-7900, as well as your Alderman, and ask them why there has been no action taken on request #1 within this letter, which was written by representatives of all 12 of the Community Management Teams (and many other neighborhood groups), and many Alderpersons, one year ago:
