Proper signage would discourage parents from dropping off their children which creates traffic and safety issues. 2 Decesare Drive is a corner lot and would like signage that would allow two spots for vehicles along the side rather than lose the entire side to "no parking signs" as it is now.

As much as these people want to believe it the end of Grays Landing is not a cul-de-sac. It is a public street intended for use by City residents. The design intent for access to the new Phenix school included the entrance at Grays Landing. Now, a very small number of residents want to try to force the entire neighborhood to drive all the way around to get to the school. I agree that it's a dangerous situation with all of the cars making 3+ point turns at the end of the street. It's a dangerous situation caused by their own actions. If the gate were opened it would allow a much smoother flow of traffic that would be a lot safer for our children.

Rest assured Rob Rodgers, this is not an issue for just "a very small number of residents." The gate at the end of Gray's Landing is for emergency vehicles only. The design intent for access to the new Phenix school NEVER included the entrance at Gray's Landing. Residents were assured during the planning phase of the school, before it was even built that this area would be for foot traffic only, meaning walking students, and that this would NOT be a child pick-up drop off area for parents.
It really isn't fair that the residents here at Gray's landing and Decesare Drive are inundated with traffic that SHOULD be going to the front of the school and following proper procedures which not only ensure the safety of other people's children but the safety of their own children as well.

What residents were assured of this? I'm a resident, why wasn't I included? Michaels Woods is full of residents with children that attend Phenix. Where do you draw the line for people who should have an input? The 4 homes you listed in your initial post? It's a dangerous situation that you created because you don't want additional traffic at your faux cul-de-sac. It didn't, nor is it going to, work. You have successfully created congestion in Michales Woods. Congratulations!

During the planning phase of the school numerous meetings were held and residents of Michael's Woods were invitied to attend via snail mail. Why you didn't get an invitation is out of the scope of my personal knowledge. Perhaps you could call the school district and ask them. The end of Gray's Landing is not a cul-de-sac. It is a dead end road with no u-turn available as the sign states. Residents such as yourself who insist on driving their children and dropping them off at our "unofficial" child drop-off point are the exact people who created this problem in the first place. It's quite simple. Take your child where he or she should be dropped off, put them on the bus or allow them to walk. Your convenience shouldn't sacrifice the safety of my own child who walks to school.

Rob Rodgers, the residents in the immediate vicinity of the school were advised that Grays Landing would not be an access point. As for creating congestion in Michaels Woods, not us my friend but the school and the parents that refuse to adhere to policy are those that brought the congestion. I'm all for the school kids residing in Michaels Woods to "Walk" to school and those that do not live here to use the proper drop-off and pick-up location at the front of the school. If that's not good enough, there are school buses that seems to be a waste due to the lack of riders. If you are an affected resident, then I champion you to speak up in a formal meeting, not complain on here and join any type of bandwagon.

How are the residents who live in the affected section of Michaels Woods forcing the entire neighborhood to drive all the way around to get to school? The problem is those parents and children that DO NOT reside in Michaels Woods are coming into the neighborhood and filling up the streets. It’s simple, if you don’t live here, don’t use this area as your convenient access point, especially considering the school and police have now sent out messages stating to use the proper drop-off and pick-up point (at the front of the school). The residents in the affected area do not mind the walkers; it’s the parents that feel it’s necessary to drive their kids a quarter mile to get to school.

As for opening the gate, the school has already stated they WILL be installing additional gates along the access road behind the school to restrict the flow of traffic. The yellow gate is for EMERGENCY traffic only and will only be opened during such.

This entire situation was brought on by a few parents that teamed up and spread the word that there was a shortcut to get to the school. Now that there are enforceable signs and policy set by both Hampton School Administration and the Hampton City Police, it’s up to the parents to be a role model to their children and abide by the law. If this situation were say in front of your house, would you accept it or fight to protect the safety of the neighborhood?

Danna...I always have a good day. I get to wake up and see my family every day. I get to go to work and enjoy my job ever day. Heck, I even get to watch my favorite sports teams on tv. But best of all, I get to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, in particular the First Amendment while ensuring my neighbors who like or dislike me are safe.

Personally I think this blog should be kept alive to remind everyone how the Phenix School, the City of Hampton, The Hampton Police Department, and the PARENTS have no regard for the neighborhood. Until each of these entities comprehends something must be done, I am certain the neighborhood will continue the good fight to preserve what they have left. They have done what they can and continue to do what they can to address the situation. Maybe those who are violators should do what they can; follow the rules, laws, and basic common sense. Then and only then would this issue be resolved.

Still not resolved. Parents still use and will continue to use the area as a child pick up and drop off location until the city resolves it with proper signage and control. It's a matter of time before someone gets hurt (like the crossing guard last year who was almost hit by an irate-I-don't-want-to follow-the-laws parents. Parents talk on their cell phones, speed, harass members of the neighborhood, etc. One would think that not only the city would be concerned but the school would be as well. The school releases kids to the neighborhood who don't even live here. They stand around waiting to see if their parents are going to show up. Lovely. Be proactive Hampton... not reactive!

Has anyone bothered to call the school directly in the past 2 years to log this complaint?? I have found that when you call the school system directly they address parking and safety issues.

Public works handles thgis, along with all the storm clean up. Leave this open until it is resolved.
