Agree it is impossible to have a child walk from Indian to Wayne hills

I think we should be proactive & fix this before a child gets killed going to school. After something bad happens you won't be able to spend money fast enough trying to get re-elected.

Ridiculous, no shoulders and with the winter months approaching it's just wrong. Safety of children should be a priority.

It is ridiculous! The town should do something asap. Berdan Ave is too hazardous to have any child walk. Put in walkways or give them a bus.

This sounds like a very dangerous situation. It seems to me like the school administration either doesn't care or has overlooked an extremely hazardous situation. I hope to see them resolve this matter quickly. Its the obvious thing for them to do. To ignore the situation is negligence on their part.

Aren't we going to feel extremely bad when something tragic occurs? Let's get this fixed before it's too late! As parents, we need to know that our children are safe on their way to school, as well as at school and back home again too.

As a member of the community I am appauled that we let our children walk on this road. I drive it daily and can only imagine when conditions get worse that we will be reading about an accident. Why must we wait till we have a possible injury to resolve this. If something happens to a child who will be responsible or better yet liable? I see cars driving on this road going well above the speed limit and with no sidewalks it's only an accident waiting to happen. If you want kids to walk to school then have a sidewalk put in with steel barriers and also elevated crossings in some areas protecting the children. Just recently a off road event in California had a car go off the road and kill many. It had no barriers and the onlookers were only 10 feet from the speeding off road cars. What is the difference on kids walking Berdan with cars traveling at times 60mph+ with no sidewalks or barriers? Berdan during the early morning hours when frost starts is a skating ring with cars all over. Kids have no where to hide if a car slides off the road? Would pse&g or cable have workers on that road without a truck near them or cones on the road? Wake up Wayne Township before someone gets hurt.

Something has to be done about this immediately. I am appaulled to think that the school district and the transportation dept have not addressed this serious matter concerning the welfare of our children who have to walk home from school under dangerous conditions. Something has to be done before a tragedy accurs.

Keep our children safe!!! Make a walkway or provide a bus service. Taxes are too high in Wayne for no alteratives.

ANY CHILD THAT LIVES 2 MILES FROM SCHOOL AND IS NOT BUSSED, AND IS FORCED TO WALK ON A ROAD WITHOUT WALKS, IS AT RISK OF GETTING HIT BY A CAR OR TRUCK. I AM SURPRISED THAT A TOWN AS POPULATED AND WEALTHY AS WAYNE CAN'T PROVIDE BETTER SERVICE FOR THE FAMILIES THAT LIVE THERE. WITH ANOTHER WINTER COMING SOON CREATING HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS, THIS IS JUST A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN.

I don't understand why this road isn't deemed a hazardous roadway. In my concern for additional alternatives, I have discovered the following state law Policies and Procedures Manual for Pupil Transportation, N.J. State Department of Education N.J.S.A. 18A:39-1 et seq. “ Transportation To and From Schools” .

The Board of Education is concerned with the safety of students who walk to and from school along roadways determined to be hazardous routes. The chief school administrator shall work in conjunction with municipal officials to determine the criteria necessary for the classification of a hazardous route and shall maintain a list of all hazardous routes in the district. The chief school administrator shall develop rules and regulations to supply courtesy transportation for students who must walk to and from school along routes designated by the School District to be hazardous routes. The criteria used to determine hazardous routes may include but shall not be limited to the following:

A. Population density;

B. Traffic volume;

C. Average vehicle velocity;

D. Existence or absence of sufficient sidewalk space;

E. Roads and highways that are winding or have blind curves;

F. Roads or highways with steep inclines and declines;

G. Drop-offs that are close proximity to a sidewalk;

H. Bridges or overpasses that must be crossed to reach the school;

I. Train tracks or trestles that must be crossed to reach the school;

J. Busy roads and highways that must be crossed to reach the school.
With that said I wonder who are the municipal officials that are required to review this information and make a decision, I guess I'll have to do more research to find out who the responsible party is.

IF IT WAS A GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL CHILD THAT HAS TO GO THIS STREET I BET IT WOULD HAVE ONE.............

Bus service should always be provided when there is not a safe route for children to get to school, regardless how far of a distance the child lives from the school. If the roadway is not safe the district should either provide transportation, and or a school crossing guard/chaperone.

Absolutely appalled that a busy town like Wayne can not or will not provide a safe method of transportation for children to get to school. Shame on YOU!!!

We live in a world today of high inflation, taxes and a roller coaster economy which causes many duel working households. Our taxes pay the salaries for politicians, police, fire department’s , teachers and many other civil servant positions.
Politicians write bill’s, vote on bills and put these bills into law. One law in the state of NJ will not provide bus service for children living within 2 miles of their school, leaving our children to walk to school on dangerous intersections with no sidewalks, crossing guards and vehicles traveling at a speed in excess of 45mph thus putting these children into harms way.
The politicians who vote and pass these laws leave their homes in the morning and walk as far as their driveway to get into a State owned vehicle, that we the voters pay for. I think it’s high time we take back our votes and put people into public office who actually care about the safety of our children and listen to the people who voted them into office.

As a Wayne resident, I could not believe this issue still comes up. You would think after so many families in the community have complained, the board of education would have come up with a solution. I agree Berdan is not a road a child should walk to and from school. First, try to go to the school board, director of transportation or the schools superintendent. If that doesn't work, try our local township officials. Then go to the papers, news, and get the press involved. YOU must pursue the issue and can not stop. I get disgusted everytime I hear about stories like this one . Today , we live in a world where it is NOT safe to allow our children to walk anywhere alone , let alone in an area of No sidewalks , one can easily be run down by a car or abducted ! what on earth do we pay taxes for ?? It is down right disgusting for a child & family to be treated this way ! Shame on you !
How do you sleep at night ..............
Make walk-ways , sidewalks or for gods sake , pick up this child and get her to school safely .........

School Board of Education
School Superintendent
Transportation Supervisor
The superintendent said since we have a large number of children that need to find their own means to get to and from school the district must strictly adhere to DOE regulations. The number of children we are speaking of approx 5,800. Now, times that by the 600 districts in the state of New Jersey. WOW, that's a lot of children.
The municipality does not want to hear about providing safe walkways for all the children in this district.
So I've have contacted our Towns Mayor, hopefully he will be able to assist us parents that are concerned.

Update...

Office of Wayne Township Mayor Vergano told me its not a town issue its a state issue, contact your local Sentor and Assemblyman. So we received no help from the township for a safe passage to and from school. So I now contact Senator Keven O'Toole and Assemblyman Scott Rumana and David Russo. Let's see they can help provide a safe passage.

Too date, nothing has been resolved... No one has been able to help. Maybe the local media can be of some assistance.

What a disgrace!! That road is super dangerous on good days let alone with icing and snow. Wayne Township should've at the very least offered bussing assistance at a low cost. I pay all that money in taxes and nobody would even take a call? I got secreteries and voice mails. I think we need to re-look at our towns officials and get rid of the ones who just pass it on or have no accountability. I for one will remember all the ones involved who did nothing and make sure there voted out!! Shame on you Wayne. You didn't even help for the kids!!
