Agree. I’m crossing here with a stroller as well and cars simply will not stop... even if you’re in the middle island waiting. Their attention is on the side street. I’m not sure what solution is (officer, light?) but im sure this will end in a accident.

Yes and with the new residential building opening up at the Waldo & Newark corner, foot traffic in that crossing is only going to increase. The city really needs to take some proactive measure with this intersection.

The traffic lights on Newark adjacent to the cemetery and the the corner of Waldo have been out since construction started on the building at the corner of Waldo. It is very, very dark and dangerous at night.

@ninol, do you mean street lights? There is currently no traffic light at the intersection, but there is a need for it

I live at 108 Waldo and have seen/experienced the dangers. There needs to be some sort of traffic calming measures taken to prevent vehicles from speeding up/down Newark. NEED NEED bike Lanes! I've seen far too many citibike folks nearly hit! I've wondered if reversing the one way direction of Waldo would help. Seems to be a very popular shortcut from Baldwin for folks heading downtown.

I live on this corner and am greatly concerned by the same issues listed. Walking with a stroller, I’m often concerned for safety for myself and my children and believe that the city needs to do something to prevent cars from flying down Newark Ave. Too many accidents have occurred here, and far too many close encounters. Earlier today, from my window, I watched two young boys trying to cross Newark Ave (at Waldo), and it took close to 5 minutes before anyone stopped (they were stuck in the middle and couldn’t cross over). We plead with JC to address this!

Newark also has a slight bend just before the intersection, if you are coming from downtown towards journal square, which makes it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and vice versa. The bicyclists using the sidewalk to zip downhill along Newark towards downtown is a whole other issue - also an accident waiting to happen, especially around the same bend.

Install a traffic light: blinking or intermittent red signal during “rush hour” and a blinking yellow (caution) during all other hours would be a good start. Blinking red would be enough to stop traffic for pedestrians waiting to cross, and a blinking yellow would increase the likelihood of motorists yielding to pedestrians if there’s anyone waiting to cross. This stretch is frequented by students of all ages walking to and from PS 5 and McNair High School, both of which are a short distance from this dangerous curve.

The least that needs to be done is to add a stop sign at the intersection of Newark & Pavonia Ave (going eastbound) and add a RAISED crosswalk that doubles as a speed bump. That would at least slow down traffic but there are still too many cars who are looking to turn onto Newark ave quickly who don't look for crossing pedestrians.

Ideally, a traffic light would be added that allows crossing time for pedestrians when the button is pressed that stops ALL traffic for enough time to cross.

The crosswalk at the bottom of the hill (Newark & 7 St.) is equally as dangerous. There needs to be speed bumps added halfway down the hill that stretch completely across the street.

Slowing traffic on this stretch of road would also help to alleviate the congestion entering downtown occurring daily now which is horrendous for air quality and pedestrian/cyclist safety.

I agree with the comments shared by others, drivers on Newark almost never stop.

To make matters worse, drivers on Waldo who are turning right onto Newark are always looking to the LEFT for oncoming cars, they rarely look RIGHT towards the crosswalk. I've had a couple close calls where someone turning from Newark almost hit me.

The intersections of Newark Ave/Waldo Ave and Newark Ave/Pavonia Ave are under review for Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), which are user-actuated flashing pedestrian warning signs. We will also conduct a speed study along Newark Ave in this area to determine what type of traffic calming measure is warranted. Please allow 3 to 6 months for the study to be completed.

@Jennifer C, thanks for the update. What are the timelines for the RRFB review/implementation? Any chance that can be expedited? While carrying an infant and waiting to cross the intersection today, I watched about 20+ cars zip by before one actually stopped.

Hi @Jennifer C, I'm following up along with magnolia123 to understand the timelines on the RRFB. Usually 5-20 cars will drive without stopping for me and my children. There are elementary & high school students that walk on the hill to the nearby schools.

@Jennifer C, I am also a concerned local who would like to better understand the timeline as this is a concern posted multiple times over the past months by MANY. I live right near this intersection and see on a daily basis the need for safety measures implemented asap (and to not wait until a tragedy occurs). This area is frequented by teens, individuals, children, and families walking with strollers. I have also reached out to the local councilman on many occasions and have not received adequate response. At minimum, blinking lights should be posted at this intersection asap, as well as down the hill on Newark (where I witnessed an accident just the other week). Please help in making this area a safer place for us all.

Are there any updates on the RRFB installations at Waldo and Newark?

Nearly hit by a car while pushing a stroller and crossing the street yesterday. Same scenario - car on Waldo turning right on Newark started pulling out when the car on Newark stopped for us. This is incredibly dangerous and ridiculous that the city will not take timely measures to address. I am calling in the traffic department but wanted to document here as well.

Lived in this area for almost 12 years now and use this crossing all the time and the one at the bottom of Newark as well. Have also written with these same issues to my council person about the crossing issues. To no avail. I think there are plans in the works but I'd like to know a concrete timeline. Lights for pedestrians are very much needed at both pedestrian crossings to make cars stop. Pedestrians have the right of way but drivers fail to recognize that rule of the road.

Flashing lights were recently installed at the crosswalk just west of the intersection everyone is concerned about. I really hope this issue wasn't closed because of that. The problem at Waldo and Newark has not been addressed.

RRFBs were installed at both Pavonia Ave and Waldo Ave on Newark Ave. A speed radar feedback sign will also be installed on Newark Ave EB approaching 7th St.

Thanks for the follow-up @jennifer c. Can you please help us better understand what the speed radar feedback sign does? Does it simply inform the driver of how fast they're driving or does it generate a ticket for speeding? Will the data be captured and used for a traffic study?

These are all steps in the right direction, but we need to make speeding down this stretch of Newark unappealing and virtually impossible. Speed bumps, narrower lanes, and protected bike lanes, in conjunction with traffic enforcement, are really critical to addressing the issue fully.

Agree. the ridiculously visible flashing lights do not solve the problem. You think they might (they're very visible) but drivers are not used to seeing this type of light or they don't care.

The speed radar feedback will alert drivers of their speeds. It does not issue tickets. We are still in the planning stage of redesigning the roadway.

If the speed radar feedback does not report statistics on the number of times the speed limit is breached, can we have someone from Traffic stop by for 10 minutes and count? Just so you see how bad the situation is. If it was your neighborhood or your route, you would be afraid to cross here with children or someone elderly.

They need to install proper traffic lights and stop signs instead. This area is very urban.

Even with all the narrowing of lanes and lighted crosswalk, this is still an extremely dangerous place to cross. As a driver there are a lot of things to contend with: cars trying to enter high traffic from waldo (right turn at a stop light), tight curve and lanes, lane crossers from both sides and an upcoming bus stop. This it too much information for drivers to process and I continue to see many of them completely miss pedestrians in the cross walk (even with all the flashing lights). Drivers are simply not capable of dealing with this area well or perhaps they don't care or understand. PLEASE put a light in before someone gets hurt!

I cross at this crosswalk every day multiple times a day and agree - even with the flashing lights, almost nobody stops. You will stand there for a year if you don't eventually try to get in the intersection and face the traffic, which is typically going 40 mph+.

And when somebody finally does, it's usually the people turning right onto Newark off of Waldo (who have no signal facing them!) who are trying to gun it as well, at the exact moment that you are, because they see a break in the traffic where they have a chance to merge...

I have almost been hit at this intersection many many times. And I am always paying full attention, looking 360 degrees around me. Interestingly, this spot is dangerous both during the day (when drivers are going to notice the flashing lights less) and at night - when the flashing lights are more obvious (at least to people coming down Newark) but they are less likely to see the Pedestrians.

In general, almost all drivers seem to completely disregard the flashing lights, and do not even slow down. They are typically flying *downhill* here, which does not help.

In 2022, Newark Avenue was repaved and reconfigured to incorporate protected bike lanes to narrow the travel lanes, along with high visibility crosswalks and curb extensions at the intersection with Waldo Avenue.

Unfortunately, this intersection has historically dealt with several issues that impede safety: 1) Newark Avenue has a very steep grade, 2) Newark Avenue has a significant horizontal curve downstream of this intersection, and 3) Pavonia Avenue intersects Newark Avenue approximately 100 feet from this intersection.

A traffic signal warrant analysis will need to be conducted. This analysis will take up to 6 months to complete. If the analysis determines that a traffic signal is warranted, traffic signals are a major investment that cost nearly $500,000 to design and construct. Funding would need to be identified, design would need to happen, and construction would follow, resulting in a process of approximately 2-3 years.

This intersection has been added to a list of traffic signal warrant analyses to be conducted by Traffic Engineering. To maintain a centralized list of priority requests, the issue will be closed but may be re-opened in the future.
