Description
This derelict, city-owned building has been sitting empty for at least the 8+ years I have lived here. We are in the middle of a housing crisis; there is absolutely no excuse for its neglect. While walking around the neighborhood, I have personally encountered at least three private developers investigating the property. It would be very easy to find someone willing to turn this ugly waste of quality real estate into new housing. We just passed a parcel tax to discourage vacancies, yet--at least in the Bella Vista neighborhood--Oakland itself is the worst violator.
There is also graffiti here, on a regular basis. I don't care about the graffiti. I care that the city is using this massive building to house stray cats, instead of allowing someone to turn it into housing for PEOPLE.
