I reported this as well and they are considering options. They said they made a change. But I don’t see an improvement. Seems worse now. I wonder if they’d consider this overpass for a diverged diamond intersection (ddI)?

I totally agree. This area is a hot mess every weekday night commute around 5:00 p.m. They seriously need to fix it. The westbound traffic on 10600 S is always getting blocked by people turning to go south on I-15.

Thank you for your feedback. The rates that this ramp meter runs during the PM peak hour were increased in the last few months but the meter still struggles to keep up with the heavy demand. The purpose of ramp meter is to protect the operation of mainline I-15, to keep the on-ramp traffic from causing southbound I-15 to slow and start backing, causing delay for a much larger number of motorists, impacting air quality even more. This has to be our priority. However, we are looking at changes in how the interchange itself works, potentially sending the westbound left in two smaller groups rather than one big group. We've had success with this at other locations. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

@UDOT Traffic Signals: Yes, it's definitely a balancing act. This whole area is just bad during the evening rush hour. If you speed up the ramp meter, it impacts I-15. If you allow more westbound cars onto the ramp with a slow meter, people start blocking eastbound 10600 S traffic constantly, which is what has been happening recently. If you make this change you're talking about, westbound traffic will start backing up on 10600 S as far back to State Street, which already has been happening at times. Ultimately, I think some new and creative solutions are needed for this area. It's nice you can get off I-15 northbound at 10600 S to go directly behind the mall and bypass 10600 S itself. But it would also be nice if you could get onto I-15 southbound this way, for example. The problem is this area is too many busy and active points too close to each other: the I-15 exits/entrances, the mall exit/entrance, and a State Street intersection. It's a crazy area.
