Description
Someone is taking the in-street crosswalk sign off the street and moving it to the sidewalk, practically every day. I put it back when I can (which is no small feat, since it's really heavy and traffic is nearly constant at this location - sometimes drivers zip around me WHILE I am placing the sign back on the center line!).
What gives? Is there a good reason for the sign being shifted? And/or are they breaking a law by removing the sign?

So it's not just me. Hmm. My one thought was, is this a school bus issue? Are there still schoolbuses that come out of Bradley and turn into Orange from the old high school there?
Even so, IF there is a regular vehicle that can't negotiate the corner because of the sign, then surely the sign can be placed in such a way as to accommodate that -- i.e. north of the crosswalk rather than south, or whatever works.
Time for a stake-out?!

i move this back when i have seen it moved as well! that means this happens more often than we all thought.
yes, if a larger vehicle needs it moved regularly, then there has to be a better part of the intersection for it.

So it was off the road again this afternoon, and sitting on the sidewalk on the east side of Orange. I crossed the road with three kids in tow, and then went back to place the sign.
An elderly neighbour thanked me, and said he puts it back when he can, although it's very heavy and unwieldy. I worry that a good citizen is going to get bowled over while trying to make the crosswalk safe for others.
Dammit, who is moving the sign? When? And why aren't they moving it BACK?!

Sign on the sidewalk at noon today, so I moved it back to the median, north of the crosswalk. By 1 p.m. it was on the sidewalk again.
Somebody obviously Feels Very Strongly about this. Somebody also obviously lives or works right nearby.
Citizen stake-out? Or does a NHI reporter fancy a porch-sitting gig? Easy pickings - by today's schedule, it will take less than an hour to catch Somebody in the act!

I have also noticed that the pedestrian sign is often on the sidewalk, but am too scared to put it back!
BTW - where is the pedestrian sign that used to be on State St at Eld St????

The sign is still going walkabout. It also looks to be quite heavily damaged. Maybe one vehicle is constantly bashing into it, and that's who is shifting it? Would it work better on the south side of the intersection?
If we can find out who is moving it, then we can find out why, and then we can figure out how to solve the issue for them AND for us.

The sign is still being regularly removed. Today (Saturday 21 November) I put it back in the street around 1pm when crossing the road with a small child. On our return at 2.30 it was back on the sidewalk. A car swerved around me as I was replacing it on the road, in a particularly awesome illustration of the need for extra safety measures at crosswalks.
There was no UI work or street fixing going on; it was just a quiet Saturday afternoon. Whoever is moving it lives nearby - the sign is always on the northeast corner of the intersection. If you're reading this, can you please front up and explain WHY, so we can figure out if there's a way to fix whatever your problem is?
Seriously, that sign is heavy. You're not just moving it for a laugh, and presumably you're not doing this to deliberately jeopardize your neighbours. You must have an issue that, to you, is way bigger & more important than my kids' safety. So please, let's hear what it is.

east rockette, i couldn't have said it any better. i completely agree.
it is definitely someone close-by, considering the number of people who happen upon it moved and move it back so consistently. i must do this heavy little dance at least three times a week myself.
what say you, pedestrian sign mover?
(if i have some paper, i will print this issue out and post it near the location in hopes of an answer!)

The sign hasn't been there at all this season. I'm assuming that whoever repeatedly removed it last year (the school? because of the bus traffic in and out of Bradley?) has the ear of Traffic & Parking, and successfully requested there be no sign this year. But it would be nice to have this out in the open, so that pedestrians have a chance to put their case. A crossing outside a school that draws speeding through-traffic and heavy turning traffic has MORE need of a sign, not less.
(The sign at Orange and Bishop has also been repeatedly moved off the road recently, presumably to accommodate Nica's delivery trucks and their turning radiuses. We should probably open a separate issue for that.)
