The city has no problem letting these VRBO type set ups fly under the radar and thrive, despite being a violation. It's a joke and in insult to homeowners as well as legitimate, legally run businesses.

The city is benefiting from the tourism tax revenue the properties are generating.

The "city is benefiting?" I'm not. The neighborhood isn't. This is a tired argument by people who think they can make a buck off their residentially zoned property. Transient rentals are a strain on garbage services, parking and other issues I don't see the city increasing these services through their so-called "benefits." If visitors would stay in legally licensed rental properties such as hotels and B&Bs, the "city" would still "benefit." In addition, there are hundreds, if not thousands of condos and apartments being built downtown that the city will "benefit" from in tax revenue.

Chilli5269, it's not an insult to me as a homeowner or legal business owner. To me, it means that I live in a progressive city that is on the forefront of innovation and progress. It means that we are inviting new, creative, hardworking people to visit our city because it's more affordable to do so. We can't stay stuck in our old ways forever; airbnbs allow visitors to come and spend money in our city who may not be able to if their only option was a hotel. Uber and Lyft are thriving because they created a better solution to a transportation issue. Additionally, who is to say that the airbnb renter is any worse of a person coming and going in your neighborhood than the full-time resident? Do you care who checks in and out of a hotel in your community? No, probably not.

Just offering my opinion (opinion being the key word before anyone jumps down my throat) so as to say that not everyone has a close-minded way of thinking about airbnbs and vacation rentals.

Anonymous, no offense meant to you personally. I was arguing the point about the city benefiting. I have heard that point many times in the past and it doesn't make sense to me. And - It's just my opinion. Also, to Stpetelife, I don't care about who checks in and out of hotels because they are not next door to me and not in my zoning. Why would I? In addition, I have worked in the hospitality business and I'm familiar with what can go on there. Right now I'm not convinced that Air B&Bs are right for our neighborhood and legally they are not permitted. That's all, folks. No offense meant to anyone personally.

Stpetelife, I wish I cared whether you meant offense or not...I don't. If the city wants to be progressive then stop enforcing all codes not just the selective ones for the pets making money on the side. The one you pointed out is legal, (and how do you figure that), has makeshift building going on all the time, loud music, guests park in neighbors drive ways and block them, there is ZERO consideration but the owner must be a friend of the mayor because they do nothing! It's a nuisance for people who want to own a home, in a neighborhood not a hotel row. The city has a history of enforcing some rules and letting others slide. Hotels and Bed and breakfasts also allow visitors to come and go and spend money...without being in the middle of a residential area. So easy...just follow the rules.
