Last year, a speeding car nearly ran over my son and me as we were crossing Highland Street to get to Calvin Hill. Months later, it remains the only bad memory in all the three years that he attended the school. This is far more a pressing issue than meets the eye.

This has been a major issue for quite some time. It would be amazing if the design of the street contributed to the vitality of the neighborhood, instead of making it into a place that many people must avoid.

Have you submitted a request for a "complete street" through the city's new policy / design manual?

This is so critical. Calvin Hill is not the only school in the neighborhood, and there are so many children being dropped off and picked up in the area throughout the day. Some significant measures need to be taken to control cars speeding down this hill before someone is hurt!

With so many children here, it is imperative that traffic slow down. Please put slow down signs and pedestrian cross walk signs on this block of Highland Street.

Change is needed before a devastation occurs which will be permanently on the shoulders of the city. Traffic signs/ speed humps or other calming devices will surely be less time and money than a lawsuit. Please see that this is fixed immediately.

was driving by on this day and same issue with speeding but all the way down by dixwell and elizabeth in this case an atv went on the side walk as children were waiting to get picked up at elm city middle, some kids actually jumpd back to avoid getting hit. the atv sped onto side walk and back to the street

I don't understand why it's difficult to get the City to take action on such an important matter. Parents should get together and go down to City Hall!!

Getting into and out of your car or crossing the street should not have to be life threatening...but on the upper part of Highland Street it is dangerous everyday. This problem has been brought to the attention of the New Haven mayor and Transportaion Department for years now...yet nothing has ever been done to permanently make this part of Highland Street safer. We can not tolerate this anymore. New Haven needs to deal with this NOW. No excuses. No more hit and runs.....I hope they aren't waiting for a fatality.

Again, while the city and the school have been in discussion about this and the preschool has made some changes to its pick-up and drop-ff procedures to make the situation safer-- the speeding up and down the hill has yet to be curbed.

Has this been addressed?

Has anyone asked the NHPD how many tickets have been given out specifically in Prospect Hill (not including Whitney Avenue) for the following illegal behaviors over the past 2 years?

1) Speeding
2) Noise violations
3) Running red lights
4) Riding vehicles on sidewalks

I would not be surprised if the answer is "close to 0" for all of the above.

My children have aged out of this school so I am sorry that I do not know how it stands anymore. Again, the City and the preschool had been in conversation about working together but I do not know if it has been resolved.

Alfreda Edwards (the alderwoman in the area) and I have been trying to get some attention paid to the issue for some time. I met with one of the city's traffic experts, the head of Calvin Hill and a parent on site a while back. Speed humps were ruled out because there were concerns about the grade of the road and visibility. I've just reached out to the Transportation, Traffic and Parking Department again and will let you know what how they respond. While they are understaffed, this issue is important and should be addressed.

I just reached out to Traffic and Parking again on this issue. We met with some parents and the principal of Calvin Hill a while back to try and resolve the issue. Traffic and Parking said the grade of the road was too steep to install speed humps and that they were going to look into other alternatives. I'll try and get this moving along again.

Please stop closing issues that are, well, still issues! T&P issues take a while to resolve; meanwhile Highland still needs traffic calming and there's still a school there. Please leave this open for dialog and possible fixes. Thanks.

Agree. This is a serious issue that should be left open until fixed.

The nursery school and the grade school next door have up to 700 children in that vicinity, plus teachers and parents. Highland needs traffic calming measures immediately, comparable to what exist on Canner at the Hooker School.

Until fixed ? I hope we still have internet then. NO lol.

My children attend The Children's Preschool which is on Whitney Ave, but just past Highland Street. They are on their bikes and scooters and we have an extremely difficult time crossing Highland Street each morning. Cars always pull forward and block the pedestrian path to cross, but also cars turning onto Highland from Whitney are always in a rush and never wait for us to cross unless I stand in the middle of the road blocking them. I can't tell you how many of the cars are carrying children in them and likely on their way to Calvin Hill and Foote Schools. It would be a huge improvement to have a crossing guard there. Either way, there are enough schools in that zone that something should be done about speeding in this neighborhood which is full of walkers, bikers, and pedestrians, many of whom are young children.

The police department is non existant.It's the laughing stock of CT. and points far beyond.Intentional hiring of dolts,low IQ Neanderthals took place during Destiffano's reign , All for contract bargaining.
