Description
Vehicles traveling west on 1st Avenue North then wanting to turn northbound on 49 Street North are utilizing the parking area and bike lane to make their turn instead of turning from the northern most, properly marked lane of 1st Avenue North. This happens all times of day and I have witnessed several near crashes involving the improperly turning cars and cars in the proper turn lane and bicyclists trying to continue on 1st Avenue North. Can something please be done to abate this problem?

Thank you for your SeeClickFix post to the Mayor’s Action Center referencing improper right turns at 1 Avenue N/49 St N. The Mayor has asked me to respond directly to you regarding your concern. On May 20, 2019 and May 23, 2019, Traffic Enforcement Officers monitored this intersection. During the observation times they observed some violations in which cars got into the bicycle lane and parking spaces early. The officers felt they were not egregious enough to take action; however, both officers felt some other measures could be taken to prevent the early right turn. The information was forwarded to Traffic and Engineering for review. Traffic Enforcement Officers will continue to monitor the area and take enforcement action when necessary.
If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact Sergeant Burris at 893-4035. Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.
Sincerely,
Joseph Dente
