These animals reside around here permanently, contrary to what Pinellas Animal Services describes on its website as their being nomadic and unlikely to stay long, so leave them alone because they provide the sanitation services described above. I live in the reported block and see them frequently, but more so at night. My dog cannot tolerate them and dismembers them at every chance, making me the sanitation engineer hearing animal screams and collecting animal body parts. I have tried to explain Animal Services' advice about our furry engineering friends to the dog, who will not relent. The free-ranging cats of the neighborhood are no help in controlling the possum population, killing only birds.
I take issue with the county regarding the policy that
"Opossums are normally transient animals, staying only two to three days in an area before moving on. Removal is neither necessary nor desirable. If opossums were eliminated from an area, the population of roof rats and other pests would proliferate. Opossums serve an important role by controlling the unwanted, harmful pest population around our neighborhoods."

The opossum situation around here is annoying, even to a tree-hugger like me.
