It was not the city's but the state's project, since that is a state DOT highway. The DOT had no interest in what residents had to say. It was a done deal by the time they "invited input."

Why are you suprised? Politicians routinely advocate for larger roads, because more pavement = bigger contracts, which = bigger campaing contributions[kickbacks and bribes]. Isn't it obvious that whenever a road widening project is proposed, that the politicians all line up behind it. On the other hand, when residents requeststhat roads be narrowed or made safer for pedestrians, the politicians always say "NO!", or invent a thousand reasons why something as simple as paintint a crosswalk cannot be done (because politicians are beholden to the road paving industry and any trend away from paving everythng must be stalled or stopped). So, our cities continue to get uglier and more dangerous with every road "improvement". Cars make cities uglier and encourage ugly behaviour in drivers - speeding, general aggression, polluting, noise, impatience, entitlement, etc.

This morning I awake to more news about Whalley Ave. Another accident by Dunkin Donuts. A pedestran was hit and thrown into the car's windshield. Really! Are we going to wait until someone else is killed? I know the pedestran was jwalking but drivers need to have control. This isn't 95 or 91, this is a community. Kids, handicap etc are all over the place. Something needs to be done!

I hope the pedestrian is OK. It would be very interesting to see the latest traffic volume, speed and accident data from this stretch of Whalley since the street was widened. The project was advertised as "making the road safer", but I would beg to differ. Anyone want to press DOT for the latest stats? Some can be found online, but it needs to be mined.

It would be helpful if someone could take that on.

As to merlin and not surprised's points, we need to follow the lead of other cities -- elect people who will dramatically rethink the way that construction, planning and contracts are done, not do things the same way that they've been done for decades.
