Thank you for submitting your request for a crosswalk at the intersection of Valley View Rd and either Oaklawn Ave and Brookview Ave. There are a lot of factors we will have to look at regarding how to review this intersection.

If we are going to add a permanent crossing at either intersection, we will have to review this after any detour runs thru Valley View as the detour is only temporary.

Also, does your child (and others) cross at these locations more during the summer month or when school is in session? I ask because I can put out an all-weather camera to review crosses and characteristics of intersections. We believe analyzing at the busiest time will help intersections when it comes to meeting Edina's Crosswalk Policy.

Also, Edina is scheduled to install new traffic signals at the intersection of Valley View Rd and Wooddale Ave. What this may help with is possibly allowing better gaps of vehicles to assist crossings at Oaklawn and Brookview.

I ask for your patience during this process as I mentioned above, there are many factors the City has to weigh prior to reviewing these intersections.

I think installing the cameras are a great idea. I am assuming it could also capture the crazy left-hand turn behavior of drivers during rush hour heading onto Valley view from Brookview or Oaklawn. As far as frequency of crossing, I’d say it’s more consistently twice a day during the school year, but we walk to the park often in the summer as well.

I agree, traffic is very congested along Valley View during rush hour and it routinely takes 7 minutes to travel from 66th and Wooddale on Valley View (about 0.7 miles), especially since the time when the France Avenue bridge was closed. However, o have encountered regular traffic backups along Valley View from the stop sign at the intersection with Wooddale even before the France Ave construction began. It doesn’t create a good situation for pedestrians either. (A camera to review the situation as proposed would be good, and I’m attaching a photo of the stopped traffic at 4:45pm on a Thursday in case that’s informative too.) In the longer term, installing a roundabout at the intersection of Wooddale and Valley View may be pertinent, if space allows, especially considering the recent and upcoming development projects in the area, which may bring more traffic. Of course, accommodating for pedestrian and bike traffic will be critical as a part of any solutions, as the original commenter suggested.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the delays along Valley View have been occuring due to the closure of the France Ave bridge over HWY 62. We continue to ask for your patience as these closures will remain until mid July.

When it comes to traffic control change at the intersection of Valley View and Wooddale Ave, a traffic light is planned on being installed later this summer to assist with vehicle delays at this intersection. As you mentioned, this intersection had too many impacts to nearby property for a proper roundabout to be installed.

Hello Neighbors,

Edina's Traffic Safety Committee reviewed this request for a crosswalk over Valley View Rd and is recommending to not install a crosswalk as warrants were not met.

City warrants state a peak hour of 20 crosses are needed for a crosswalk to be warranted. When this location was reviewed, it saw a total of 18 crosses with a peak hour of 11.

This will now be reviewed by the Edina Transportation Commission (ETC) on Thursday, January 21st at 6 pm. Due to the pandemic, this meeting will be virtual.
