I live by there and the hedges are not overgrown. Streets are meant for vehicles and their are many areas where one can run safely like the Farmington Canal. If the hedges were obstructing the sidewalk and you had to go onto the street than you would have a afety issue.

If my memory serves correctly from childhood, "walk against the traffic and ride and run with it" So, runners shouldn't be heading into oncoming traffic anyway.

Linda I think you missed the point. Our tax dollars paied the New Haven parks dept to maintain many trails right accros the street to hike and run on. It is time to use what we the public already have paid for.

Mr Hilberg I think you missed the point. The section of road Ms. Miller reported is not part of the N.H Park and Rec jurisdiction. It is a public road in the Town of Hamden

Sorry Linda, but you're not remembering your childhood memory properly. ("If my memory serves correctly from childhood, 'walk against the traffic and ride and run with it.'") We are meant to BOTH run and walk AGAINST traffic, while you are supposed to bicycle WITH traffic. I frequently run through this very same intersection and completely agree with the original poster that the overgrown brush here causes visibility issues for walkers/runners heading west on Davis Street just past the traffic light intersection at Hartford Turnpike across the Lake Whitney bridge. We are right where we're supposed to be, in the leftmost lane walking/running against traffic, and this is probably the most unsafe part of that particular run for me.

Yes I got all of this and it is on the other side of the same intersection as the park. I think "YOU" miss MY point. Is it to much to ask that a runner cross the street to use a safe trail to run on or should the town spend more money to fix the problem because the runner does not want to use the safe trails on the other side of the street? We need to stop spending money the tax payers can not aford. That means we need to learn do do for our selves when ever posible.

Trimming back the overgrowth not only protects runner and walkers, but also drivers. I can't imagine why the response to my suggestion has been so negative when simply trimming back the overgrowth seems in everyone's best interest, and I hope only a small cost compared to other projects.

Ok Meredith I will try my best to explain. If the town of Hamden has to send out a crew to fix this you and I will have to pay for it. If the runner crosses the road it will not run up a tab on you and I as taxpayers. How simple is that? As I have said already we need to find ways to do for our selves when ever possible. Lets stop asking governement to do what we can realy do for our selves. I know this is not easy but we will all learn on the trail to success together.

Geez, I thought the point of SCF was to get small local issues fixed--such as the public safety hazard to pedestrians of an unsafe bit of road--not to debate the merits of penny-pinching. I've never heard so much grumbling on any other issues I've contributed to, and I’ve been an active member for some time! Usually someone just steps up, acknowledges the problem, and fixes it. Ms. Miller, next time I run by this intersection I will think of you and try to ascertain whether or not it's private property. Maybe we should just head over there sometime with some pruning shears? By the way, the argument of "you should be running on the trails not the road" reminds me of when I'm on my bike and am scolded to "ride on the sidewalk not the road." Walkers and runners have just as much right to the road as motor vehicle drivers, and they deserve to demand a safe route.

When there is no sidewalk or sholder of the road, no you do not have as much right to be on the road as the cars and trucks. The cars come first. This simple "FACT" goes a long way to explain why "YOU" are having such a problem with this subject. I have nothing against your running or biking as long as you do not get in the way of traffic or become a safety problem. I would think you would have more concern for your personal safety as well as the thought of what might happen to your family and or loved ones without you.

Your'e absolutely correct when stating walkers/bikers have just as much right to the road. I do have a question or two for you however, when your riding and approaching a red light do you stop behind the last car in trafiic, or do you pass on the right between the cars and walkway and what about biking on the sidwalk or running the red lights?

I just wanted to reiterate that this post is regarding the overgrowth that extends into the roadway and presents a visibility hazard no matter one's mode of transportation, but especially for pedestrians, whether running or walking to and from East Rock Park or Lake Whitney. I posted this in hopes that the overgrowth would be pruned and visibility restored. Thank you for your consideration when posting responses related to this issue.

Not sure why my last comment was blocked there was nothing malicious,derogatory etc.... so I'll try and state it again in simpler terms. I went by the intersection of Davis and Hartford Tpke both East and Westbound and was unable to find the overgrown hedges extending into roadway. Could the issue have been fixed and the posting be chaged to resolved?

This would be a non issue if you ran on the other side of the street. The last poster (ANT) was not able to even find a problem. The administrator, Kayla has blocked, wiped, or censored 3/4 of the posts on this thread. Yes I have read the trems of service. I was very careful to be accurate and truthful with ever statement I have made today.

This is one of the most dangerous intersections in Hamden or New Haven, partly due to the blind corner as mentioned above, partly because of how fast people drive on Davis. Many drivers coming over the Davis Street bridge do not anticipate the light because they do not see it coming. Finishing the sidewalk to the corner would help significantly, giving pedestrians/runners somewhere to walk/run, and also opening up the blind corner.
