I've heard several times that police are reluctant to give tickets for this particular violation because the penalties are very high. That's probably not the best reaction, considering the number of pedestrians mowed down by cars not being cautious around buses.
Jeffery. You're adding nothing positive to any of these important items. The solutions lay within an open discussion, of which, you hinder and annoy. So please add to the discussion in a way that may address the issue rather than detract.
Not sure if this is the sight of the YMCA after school program, but I used to see staff come out to greet the bus since Howe is a one way street and the kids have to exit the bus on the street side. Maybe eliminate the right on red at that corner?
Its right after george light were buses turn left to leave students and also i receive door to door service for my son...cars pass by even though the bus drivers get their attention by buzing...they keep going like nothing happening...
I've also had issues with this happening. My daughter's bus stop is on Sherman Ave and she has to cross the street and the cars just go right by even when the bus has it lights blinking and its stop sign sticking out. and all the bus driver does is beep the horn. I think the plate #s should be taken down and a warning letter sent. This way there is some record of the cars that have done this and if the same plate keeps doing this they should get a ticket.
New Haven has a $8M budget shortfall, let's get some aggressive ticketing efforts out there and we can stop dangerous drivers as well as help the city's budget.
New Haven doesn't get the ticket revenue, unfortunately, with the exception of $10 per ticket (which is less than 10% of total revenue per year).
The state statutes should be changed so that cities get a much larger share of the revenue from tickets that they issue (last year, a law was passed that gave municipalities a larger portion of revenue for tickets they write having to do with cell phone + driving violations, so that is a clear jumping off point).
The first step in this situation would be to find out exactly how many tickets the police give out each year for this particular violation, and in which neighborhoods each month, so that citizens can request greater levels of enforcement for their issues of particular concern. If you are interested in requesting this data please contact newhavensafestreets at gmail.com (citizens have been requesting this particular thing for years, but it hasn't come through yet because the city's current systems do not easily allow this type of reporting).
As of 2013 City departments have begun to review, acknowledge and respond to SeeClickFix issues. Since your issue is in the category titled "No Service Request" and was submitted prior to 2013, we are going to close and archive it. If this issue still requires City attention, please report as a new SeeClickFix issue. Thank you.
