Why didn't you alert the police to ensure her safety?

@Fran212, I did alert the police! I went straight over to the Ridley Twp. police. They could see her from the window. They told me that they are aware of the situation, but there's nothing they can do.

What the police told you is a bunch of garbage ! They can take her in custody and 302 her , I guess they just don't want to be bothered and that's not right I would go back to the police station and ask to speak to the on duty sergeant or just dial 911 this way it is on record that you made a complaint and if something should happen and the police did not get her off the street something could be done

You cleary don't know the laws of having someone committed under a 302. Not as easy as saying "Lock em up!" or people would do that constantly.

I don't know the woman or the area but I want to thank you prendie for caring enough to try to get her off of the street. I'm sure she's somebody's mother, sister, relative, friend. Very disheartening that the police won't at least get her and take her to a shelter. I know there's only so much anyone can do in situations like these but it makes me weep to think that one of my parents could be out there like that and there would be no one willing to help them. Thank you again.

An involuntary commitment is an application for emergency evaluation and treatment for persons who are "dangerous" to themselves or others due to a mental illness. Dangerousness is determined based on the following criteria:

Danger to self shall be shown by establishing that within the previous 30 days:
the person would be unable without the care, supervision and assistance of others to satisfy his/her need for nourishment, personal or medical care, shelter or self protection or safety and that death or serious physical debilitation would occur within 30 days unless treatment was provided;
the person has attempted suicide or the person has made threats to commit suicide and committed acts in furtherance of the threats; or
the person has mutilated himself/herself or the person has made threats to mutilate and committed acts in furtherance of the threats.

Danger to others shall be shown by establishing that within the previous 30 days the person has inflicted or attempted to inflict serious bodily harm on another or has threatened serious bodily harm and has committed acts in furtherance of the threat to commit harm to another.

Because this commitment is involuntary it may require the assistance of family, crisis professionals, police, ambulance and any other person involved in the crisis.

Police have taken her home on many occasions but the family unwilling to do anything about it, therefore the police can't do anything without being sued by the family. Dementia or Altzheimers is NOT a commitable offence. There is nothing a crisis center can do with a acute illness. Thats not what crisis centers are for.

Emt25 is right. We have called family and they do not care. We take her home and try our best to keep her from harming herself. We can not babysit her all the time. The real question is where is the family in all of this? If this was my mother or aunt or relative id do whatever I could to help!
