I called the head forester at the Parks Department. He said that the worms are a natural occurance of the wet spring that we had in Jersey City. He said the worms are not harmful to the trees. They will eat the leaves but will not do any permanent damage. Forester said that if the worms are troublesome in the yard they can be controlled by one of the following methods, all of which are environmentally friendly:
1. If the web is reachable it can be broken open so that the worms inside will be eaten by predators,
2. Spray area with a mixture of dish detergent and water which may be enough to curtail the worms, if this does not work then
3. Garden centers, Amazon, Home Depot, etc. sell a product called Neem Oil which can be sprayed to kill the worms or any spray that is sold as Caterpillar and Web Worm remover. The activie ingredient to look for is BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS.
