On June 25, 2019 I submitted ticket no. 6086475, asking that in light of the upcoming closure of the 4th Street off-ramp, we *please* require Chelsea Police to monitor the Beacon Street off-ramp for semis, and to ticket violators. Of course, my ticket no. 6086475 was closed the same day it was submitted with a note thanking me for my input, and they'll forward to CPD. Well, apparently the message was lost somewhere, because at 9:25pm tonight there were FOUR SEMIS lined up on Beacon Street between Broadway and Chestnut after coming off the exit that is prohibited to them. This meant that traffic was backing up in both directions on Beacon Street and the off-ramp, and the 111 bus had difficulties getting through (and was forced to let passengers off in the middle of the street). This was all so very predictable. I had to call CPD twice, and to the best of my knowledge no one has responded. Even though the police station is less than a half a block away. Enough already - coordinate with the State Police, assign details to sit at the bottom of the ramp, but DO SOMETHING. I am really starting to think that it's going to take another person getting killed because of a semi, or a semi crashing into a house, before the City of Chelsea takes this matter seriously.

You've been ringing this bell for awhile, I am hoping they finally take you serious before someone gets killed as well. Both sides of Beacon Street are going to get crushed by tractor-trailers more than they already are. I've realized this trucks clogging the street there and also clipping homes on Beacon Street are not enough to push action from City Hall, so sadly an injury/death may be the only thing that will remedy this.

I stood outside my house and watched them come off the ramp, one right after another. The worst is when they make a left turn at the end of the ramp and get stuck at the end of Beacon St. The CPD has no problem hiding out at the ramp to try and catch people speeding, but the tractor trailers not so much.

I was here in 2001 when a semi came careening off the Beacon Street ramp and didn't stop until it ran into a house on Chesnut Street - the house had to be completely rebuilt. That was a couple of years after a woman was killed when a semi came off the Beacon Street ramp and drove right over her car. I have seen more and more semis coming off the Beacon Street ramp over the past year, but almost never see anything done about it.

Yup. I’ve been here 39 years and I’ve seen every single devastating accident. Those signs they put on the bridge do absolutely nothing. The trucks follow their GPS and have no regard for safety. It’s only a matter of time until it happens again.

It’s an hour since I placed my second call to CPD, and not only have I not hear or seen any officers but two of the semis are still on Beacon Street.

A CPD sargent just stopped by to let me know that there's an officer at the bottom of the ramp pulling over semis and issuing tickets. Let's hope several days of that will get the word out to truckers coming into the Produce District that they should steer clear of the Beacon Street ramp.

I agree, where was the planning on this? Was the City involved in the planning of the closure and, if not, why not? Why does it take a resident to log a complaint before anything is done? Do we have a Official who is responsible for transportation/traffic - someone who goes to meetings and talks with agencies and businesses doing work and/or construction in the City?

We are very aware of this issue and are working with the Police to enforce this area more during these hours. We have had more officers assigned to this area to ticket and try to create a safer passage for vehicles and roads. We will continue to monitor this ongoing issue.

As said above, this ticket is NOT to be closed until I am thoroughly convinced that the issue has been satisfactorily addressed. While I am pleased to say that there has been some improvement in the monitoring of the off-ramp it is too soon to say the issue has been reasonably resolved.

yesterday early afternoon, 2 trailers exited the beacon st off ramp. Both attempted to turn left onto 2nd street at Chestnut St. Both Trailers got "stuck" because of narrow streets & on going traffic. These trailers are CARELESS, the State Police do not care about enforcement and the city does little to help the residents with THIS issue. Does the city forget WHY these trailers are not permitted to exit at Beacon St? One was careless, drove INTO a house on Chestnut Street and the driver attempted to runaway, but was caught by police.

While I continue to be pleased that Chelsea Police are are monitoring the off-ramp on a fairly regular basis from 3-11pm and are ticketing semis illegally using the exit, the fact that semis continue use the Beacon Street off-ramp on a fairly regular basis - during the hours CPD is monitoring as well as outside those hours - means the issue hasn't actually been resolved, and the ticket needs to stay open.

In addition to working with MassDOT to improve signage on the Tobin Bridge, has there been any outreach to the businesses in the Produce District and to the Amazon facility in Everett? They should be formally made aware that semis are to *never* use the Beacon Street off-ramp, and that during the Bridge/Viaduct rehab they are to use the Webster Avenue exit. Maybe if the message is coming from these business the semi operators will actually stop using the Beacon Street off-ramp.

Semis continue to regularly use the Beacon Street off-ramp outside the hours CPD is regularly monitoring it - this seems to indicate that word has circulated that there is a fixed schedule during which semis run the risk of getting tickets. Time to readjust the schedule to make it random.

While semis do continue to use the Beacon Street off-ramp, my observation is that there are fewer of them doing to now that the 4th Street exit has reopened. I will, therefore, close this ticket. I doing so, I would urge CPD to PLEASE continue monitoring the Beacon Street off-ramp and to station patrol cars there periodically. Late night and early morning hours seem to be the times semi drivers think they can get away with using the Beacon Street exit. Thank you.
