I agree with the need to remedy this, however, it is my understanding that bikes are indeed allowed on the sidewalks anywhere downtown or throughout Burlington, whether walking them or riding on them, except they are not allowed to be ridden in the pedestrian mall on Church Street. It would be good to verify this. Thanks!

@ Joy, bikes are not allowed on sidewalks in the inner fire district (downtown) which I believe is defined by the blocks inside Winooski/Main/Battery/Pearl.

@ That Guy, it’s my understanding that bikes aren’t allowed to be RIDDEN on the sidewalks in that zone by anyone over the age of 16, but that it’s ok to walk them. I believe that’s an important clarification. Regardless, I agree with the OP that the situation with this rack needs to be addressed.

The police don't appear to care about this "law" one bit. I never see them stop a bike or skateboard.

@ BurlingtonVTRegisteredReporter, that isn't the point though... the point is that the current configuration of the rack REQUIRES you to bring your bike up onto the sidewalk, drop it back down to street level, then reverse the process to get it out, which makes the rack unusable for a lot of people, especially at this location.
