Totally agree. Same situation at 5th and Otis. I hear screeching tires every day there.To avoid confusion... ALL intersections in this neighborhood should be 4-ways, IMHO.

Agree. Too much confusion going on with the every other block, alternating stop signs. Simply add 4 way stops at all intersections especially with all the cut through traffic.

This location is particularly egregious because it leads drivers to accelerate hard at the Sciarappa stop sign, leading them to fly past Hurley Park, where young children are playing, knowing that they do not have to stop again until 6th Street.

In addition, there is still no crosswalk on Hurley St. to cross Fifth St.

Totally agree! Same with the corner of Hurley and Sixth at the crosswalk that goes to the KLo playground. Cars go so fast and kids are always poking their heads out past the parked cars to try and see before they cross. A stop sign on 5th & 6th, respectively, would certainly help!

I don’t understand why, despite working on Fifth and Sixth Street this year, we can’t get a crosswalk to cross Fifth Street at Hurley.

We have worked with the Cambridge Police Department to evaluate the crash data here and there were no reported crashes is the 4-year period we looked at leading up to this report. STOP signs are used to determine who has a right-of-way at an intersection and they are not used for speed control. Drivers are intuitive, so placing STOP sign on the main road of an intersection where it is not warranted (because the side street traffic volume is substantially lower) results in drivers complying with the STOP sign less often which is a safety issue for all road users (pedestrians, drivers, cyclists). All-way STOP intersections are appropriate when there is a roughly equal volume of traffic on the main and side street, or there is a documented crash history or sight-line issue that can be mitigated by an all-way STOP. We will continue to monitor this intersection for traffic improvements and 3rd St between Cambridge St and Binney St has been posted as a 20 MPH safety zone. This report has also been forwarded to the Cambridge Police Department for traffic enforcement.

Can we at least get crosswalks? The intersection is one block from a school and between two playgrounds, yet there is no crosswalk to cross Fifth Street on either side.

Installation of crosswalks across Fifth Street will require reconstruction of the intersection corners to provide accessible ramps. Fifth Street will be subject to a full reconstruction as part of an upcoming DPW project. As part of that project, new ramps and crosswalks will be provided for all four legs of the intersection.
