Alderman Moreno agrees with you regarding the hazards of the Milwaukee/Wood/Wolcott intersection.
Consequently, he is working with the Dept. of Transportation to have upgraded signals and crossings installed at this intersection.
He is hopeful that these new signals and crosswalks will be installed sometime next year.
This signal needs modernization ASAP! My friends that come to the area don't even see it as they drive through the intersection. As a driver you are not looking at that level for a stop light. They are not event hat bright or noticeable. This should be a top priority and not banning the use of plastic bags for Moreno!
Legislation for the sake of the city environment is a separate matter from infrastructure improvements. Each alderman is given limited funds annually to make such improvements.
The improvements necessary for that intersection would have a great financial cost that if not covered by the city through other funds, would come from the alderman's funds. But then that means a dozen or so less streets and alleys will not be resurfaced.

Here we are over a year later and this has not been resolved. This is a major danger. Someone is going to get injured or killed. I just had an out of town visitor who commented that they unintentionally ran the light.
This should be prioritized above resurfacing alleys.
The existing traffic signal equipment and pedestrian ramps at the intersection are currently scheduled to be modernized in 2012 as a part of a separate Chicago department of transportation project being funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The projects was suppose to commence in the fall. Unfortunately due to delays with the state transportation department, the project had to be pushed back to the spring.
Would love to see this intersection improved as well. The traffic signals are off to the side and may cars don't notice when they're red. It's very dangerous as a pedestrian to cross, compounded by the fact that this is an awkward intersection due to the street angles.
Well Moreno finally has released in his weekly newsletter that work was supposed to start on this intersection starting Monday the 23rd. I have yet to see anything but this is not of any real consequence.
Moreno was quick to emphasize all of the "advocating, cajoling and pleading" that he did while failing to mention this incident that I started here *3 years* ago. Again, nothing too surprising, right?
Interestingly he also mentioned that he allocated 25k, WP-BuckTown allocated 27K and the rest is coming from the state. I wonder how much the state allocation ended up being because the holdup for years now has been blamed now on state money.
I have no doubt that the new intersection will be wonderful but lets not loose sight of the fact that the only thing that was truly needed here was new signals - something that I would think could be done for much less and could have been done far earlier.
Regardless, I'm glad to see this project starting.
I used to live in this neighborhood and that intersection is extremely dangerous. Not only are there no walk signals but the traffic signals are hard to see and I've seen several near accidents from cars going through a red light or not stopping for pedestrians.
The traffic signals are increasingly difficult to see - as if the lights are getting dirty or fading. You have to look every way multiple times before and during crossing. This intersection needs an overhaul of all traffic signals and addition of pedestrian crossing signals.
