Ever since the County decided to activate the ramp meters during the morning commute, the amount of traffic backed up from Route 1 to get onto the Blue Route is ridiculous. There have been mornings where I wait for 10 minutes just to get on the on-ramp to 476 South. Turn off the meters! They are not doing anything!!!

The inconsistent timing of the things doesn't help matters either. Some mornings, the meter from Baltimore Pike goes so quick that there's almost no point in having it there. Other days, it seems like an eternity sitting still.
I understand the reasoning behind the meters, but one thing PennDOT forgot when they installed them? NO ONE in the state of PA knows how to merge onto a highway properly. NO ONE understands the concept of matching speed with traffic before merging, and when some fool stops at the end of the ramp because they don't see a mile-long gap between cars, the whole ramp has to stop right back to the meter. This is made even worse when the semi behind said car has to stop and then takes a quarter mile to get back up to speed, which slows down the ENTIRE traffic stream.
I'm originally from Connecticut, where we don't have meters like this, and there are no plans on installing them (to my knowledge), even on two-lane stretches of I-95 through New London/Waterford. Why? My humble opinion is the way people are taught to drive. When I went through driver's ed, if I didn't match speed with the traffic stream, I failed the day's lesson. Why oh why can't anyone do that here?
I've seen meters like this do wonders for traffic out in Washington on I-90, as it spaces the vehicles out more. On the Blue Route, it just backs up the whole process because people don't know how to drive.

This has been an ongoing problem not only at Route 1 but also at the Baltimore Pike entrance to the Blue Route.
Engineers should have thought this through a little longer. I'll bet they don't have to sit and wait for these idiot lights to tell you it's ok to move into the oncoming traffic!
