Description
I'd like to request that a stop sign be put in place on Elm Street at the corner with Calhoun St. The purpose of my request is to slow down drive-thru traffic on Elm St. and to make it easier to go safely through the intersection when proceeding on Calhoun from the southwest. There is a definite blind spot here when cars are parked on the southwest side of Elm. Thank you for your consideration.

It’s been almost a year and a half since I first asked Macon-Bibb County, in this forum, to install speed limit and stop signs on Elm Street, near Mercer. There isn’t a single stop sign or speed limit sign on Elm, west of Telfair.
As a result, people speed up and down Elm St. every day like it’s the Indy 500 or the back stretch at Talladega. It’s simply ridiculous how fast some of these folks drive and how reckless they are. This includes utility truck drivers, UPS, FedEx, etc, who use Elm and Ross as a cut-through between Telfair and College, to avoid the stop signs on Ash and the stoplights at the intersection of Telfair and Oglethorpe.
While Elm is a public street and people are perfectly entitled to use it, is it unreasonable to ask that Macon-Bibb County should take measures to ensure that this traffic doesn’t present a danger to everyone who lives on the street?
I’ve talked to my district commissioner. I’ve talked to the city’s chief traffic engineer. I’ve heard a lot of polite talk and emory promises, but so far, I’ve seen absolutely no action.
This is a major pedestrian safety issue for this neighborhood. Sooner or later, somebody is going to get hit by a car and killed because people are driving too fast on Elm. Is that what it’s going to take before Macon-Bibb finally takes action?
