The southbound lanes need to be more clearly marked with 'turn' and 'straight' arrows on Prospect Street. Vehicles may not realize that the left-hand lane is for turns only, and this causes an additional degree of risk for all who continue through the intersection (e.g., when vehicles in both lanes continue straight through).

I agree that this is a major problem. Yale may be planning to fix it, as they are currently looking at intersections and traffic flow across their entire campus and have a large budget to rebuild streets in this area as part of their recent development agreement with the City of New Haven. I agree with the above comments and would just add that biking is dangerous at this intersection too- I have witnessed a couple of biking mishaps here.

The bridge is currently under construction, and the issue is being addressed.

I doubt the new design will be as safe and accessible to road users of all ages as it could have been if contemporary design standards (from London, Copenhagen, Sweden etc) had been used.

Let's hope so, but I've seen the plans and I highly doubt it: there are some nice walk signals but the geometry is not significantly different.

The entire bridge is being rebuilt. Presumably the new intersection will be pedestrian-friendly.
