Thank you for Reporting this issue to Jersey City. If possible, please attach photos of the tree in question as this may help us expedite your request. Per City Ordnance it is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain the sidewalk walk adjacent to their property. The property owner will need to hire a contractor with a permit from the Buildings Department to excavate and replace their sidewalk. Forestry will assess roots once notified and the sidewalk has been opened. Forestry will prune/shave any problematic roots with the upmost care for the tree. Roots will typically be addressed within 1-2 business days once sidewalk has been excavated unless delayed by storms, lack of staffing, or high volume of requests. Please note that Forestry will not prune any roots that could destabilize the tree and will only prune roots necessary to maintain your sidewalk and tree pit within the Forestry Standards. If the trees roots cannot be pruned without destabilizing the tree a determination will be made whether the tree will need to removed or not.
