Multiple cars parked in the bike lane Columbus and Jersey
Have you reviewed the screens hot I listed above, and the comments from others, from the Wots app?
Christina, how do you suggest we find a long-term solution to this? Write directly to the mayor? Councilperson?
Obviously, if a car is parked in a bike lane, having the Parking Authority check during business hours 12-18 hours later almost guarantees that it won’t be there. But that still doesn’t solve the problem.
We will need the attention of the following folks:
Patrick Conlon, president of Bike JC; Andrew Vischio, director of Traffic & Transportation; Barkha Patel, senior transportation planner.
If anyone is able to relay the concerns to them, that will go a long way.
I am on the board of Bike JC along with Patrick. I can assure you that we all ride Columbus daily and are fully aware of how hazardous and unpleasant it is. It's great to see others speaking up about it here and voicing their concerts with our representatives - keep it up! The city is aware as well, and has been conducting a redesign study specifically for this corridor.
From the city's website: "The City is currently conducting a planning and design study in conjunction with NJDOT and a consultant team to address safety issues on Christopher Columbus Drive. The study will result in roadway design alternatives that improve safety, comfort, and access for pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders along this corridor. To learn more or give us specific feedback on this street, visit our Columbus Drive Study website (https://columbusdrivestudy.com/). The final public meeting to present the plan took place on July 18. Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly when we can expect to see any implementation on this, but I imagine it will be a while. In the meantime, it's imperative that the enforcement of double-parking improves.
Thank you very much.
Attached image from a nearby street (525 Washington Blvd) sums up the attitude of the city/county towards the bike lane enforcement.
Hudson County sheriff illegally parked on bike lane from 1:11 PM to 1:29 PM today while getting lunch from Chipotle.
While it may be a while before the delineators are implemented, the enforcement of existing laws needs to start with education of local city/county officials.
This is not the first occasion of county sherriff/Jersey City police parked on bike lane for non-emergency (lunch break). There are multiple other images I have of this violation.
John, I am the original poster of this message.
I also reported this specific issue via Wots and received confirmation a citation was issued in this case, so I wouldn’t completely downplay the effectiveness of the app.
I have multiple images of issues reported via Wots app of Police or Sheriff's office parked on bike lane for non-emergencies that were closed with no explanation. Clearly, the police is above the law or when it comes to the County sheriff, it is above the pay grade of Parking Enforcement Officer to issue them a citation.
This only one thread on this topic. There are dozens of others reported on this issue.
I completely agree with you, Concerned. If you saw the last line of my comment above, I said: "Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly when we can expect to see any implementation on this, but I imagine it will be a while. In the meantime, it's imperative that the enforcement of double-parking improves."
I am completely aggravated by the lack of enforcement, trust me. I am constantly reporting violations on WOTS and I get a mixed bag of responses. Sometimes they claim citations were issued, other times they falsely claim that the violation is not illegal, as others mentioned above. It's truly maddening. I am right there with you.
